Introducing Exponents
Tells how many times the base is used as a factor Base: The number that is used as a factor We read this as “a raised to the x power” It means… 𝑎 𝑥 =𝑎×𝑎×𝑎×𝑎×𝑎… x times

Exponent Notes Exponents use multiplication. The base gets multiplied the number of times of the exponent. Example: = 2●2●2●2 = 16

Saying Exponents When x is 1 we say “a raised to the first power”
When x is 2 we say “a squared” Or you can say “a raised to the second power” When x is 3 we say “a cubed” Or you can say “a raised to the third power” When we are working with exponents we do not say “to the ten power” or “to the four power.” Instead we say “to the tenth power” and “to the fourth power.”
