Both point out the special relationship between things or events. Provides a logical method of developing a topic in writing.

3 © 2002 Pearson Education, publishing as Longman Publishers. Developing the cause and effect analysis:  A. Causal chain—prewriting exercises that focuses on important causes and effects.  B. Clarify relationships between causes and effects.

Chronological sequence—do not assume that because one event follows another in time that the first event caused the second to occur. 2. Coincidence—do not assume that because one thing occurred, it is patterned after or related to some other event.

Writing the analysis:  Topic sentence should state the topic clearly.  Topic sentence should state why certain causes and effects are being explored.  Focuses on causes and effects.  Transitional expressions emphasize cause and effect relationships.  Conclusion should flow from essay’s main topic.
