5 Jesuits Official religious order led by Ignatius of Loyola Worked to reform the church by establishing missions, schools, and universities Emphasized obedience to the Church above all

6 The Council of Trent Established by Pope Paul III to examine and address criticisms made by the Protestants Clarified Catholic teaching, addressed abuses of power, and abolished the sale of indulgences Argued the Church could help believers achieve salvation  Think: Why would Martin Luther disagree with this doctrine?

8 Religious & Social Impact of the Reformation Era The door was opened to religious freedom but not without conflict & turmoil for many years to come Both Catholics & Protestants viewed Jews and Muslims as heretics; resulted in persecution Fears of witchcraft (esp. during hardship) led to hysteria; accused witches executed Separation of church and state Series of religious wars between Catholics & non-Catholics.

9 Broadside Activity You will be creating a broadside summarizing the Catholic Reformation. Be sure to address the following topics:  Causes  Goals  Tactics  Impact (Religious, Social, Political, etc.) Use your class notes along with Chapter 1, Section 4 – pages 57- 62 as a guide. Be detailed & creative!

Step 2: Create a skit that takes a modern television cast back in time and depicts at least five of the following topics: Religion Disease Trade Art Literature Humanism Forms of Recreation Superstitions Violence & ProtestsBooks for the Masses Education Housing Decline of Traditional Culture  Have fun, be creative, KEEP IT SCHOOL APPROPRIATE!
