Nutrition Basics Calories Essential Nutrients
3
What is a Calorie? Good?Bad? The amount of heat it takes to raise one gram of water one degree centigrade.
4
Calories: where are they found? Organic, carbon containing substances wood, oil, paper, alcohol, cloth, coal, trees, hay….. Calorie (energy) sources relevant to nutrition Carbohydrates Lipids (fats and oils) Protein Alcohol…not essential….provides 7 calories/gram FOOD! 4 calories/gram 9 calories/gram
5
Calories: where do they originate and how do they get into food? Think plants. What is the origin of most of their organic matter (dry mass)? carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in the air we breathe What is the ‘CO 2 packaging’ process called? photosynthesis A visual on where Calories (organic matter) come from in food.Calories

Essential Nutrients What does ‘essential’ mean to you?
11
