2. The European strategy – 2006 Complementary issues 15.Fundamental physics impacts both scientific and philosophical thinking, influencing the way we perceive the universe and our role in it. It is an integral part of particle physics research to share the wonders of our discoveries with the public and the youth in particular. Outreach should be implemented with adequate resources from the start of any major project; Council will establish a network of closely cooperating professional communication officers from each Member state, which would incorporate existing activities, propose, implement and monitor a European particle physics communication and education strategy, and report on a regular basis to Council. ➜ EPPCN

3. The European strategy update – 2013 What the European Strategy for Particle Physics says on the Wider impact of particle physics n)Sharing the excitement of scientific discoveries with the public is part of our duty as researchers. Many groups work enthusiastically in public engagement. They are assisted by a network of communication professionals (EPPCN) and an international outreach group (IPPOG). For example, they helped attract tremendous public attention and interest around the world at the start of the LHC and the discovery of the Higgs boson. Outreach and communication in particle physics should receive adequate funding and be recognised as a central component of the scientific activity. EPPCN and IPPOG should both report regularly to the Council. CERN-Council-S/106

IPPOG – an International Network 33 members representing 25 countries + CERN, DESY, FNAL and 5 experiments Founded in 1997 (as EPPOG), IPPOG is an International network of physicists who commit a fraction of their time in education and outreach. http://ippog.web.cern.ch/ippog_membership IPPOG members have a National mandate or a mandate from a big experiment or a mandate from a big national or international laboratory.

5. IPPOG PURPOSE The principle aim of the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG) is to contribute to global efforts in strengthening cultural awareness, understanding and support of particle physics and related sciences. More specifically, IPPOG’s purpose is to raise standards of global outreach and informal science education efforts of particle physics and to communicate its results and findings to the public by, amongst other things: Strengthening the sustainability, reproduction and growth of outreach activities in particle physics and related disciplines through the provision of reliable and regular discussion forums and information exchange for science institutions and laboratories as well as for individual scientists engaged in science outreach and informal science education world-wide. Raising standards for outreach and informal science education initiatives by proposing and implementing strategies designed to share lessons learned and best practices for outreach in particle physics and related fields. Providing explanatory materials for helping disseminate results from particle physics and related subjects.

6. Effort, Needs & Support Support (FTEs, use of infrastructure, in-kind, ad-hoc,…) from CERN, Fermilab, EPS HEPP High-Energy and Particle Physics Division of the European Physical Society, TU Dresden, US National Science Foundation and the US Department of Energy. Manpower for coordinating masterclasses Uta Bilow (Dresden) funded by CERN for 3 years 2013-2015 before: Helmholtz Alliance: Physics at the Terascale 2008-2012 Ken Cecire (Notre Dame) funded by Quarknet for US based Masterclasses A lot of voluntary effort provided by IPPOG members, and local teams at universities,… Thanks to all who are helping !! and we need to make sure a successful story can continue Funding structures (cash and in-kind) and membership fees need to be envisaged to professionalize IPPOG and make it a true player in the European Strategy. International

7. Professionalizing IPPOG IPPOG today is a well established and well recognized club. We maintain good activities, e.g. the International masterclasses and the IPPOG resources DB. But IPPOG has no structures to secure its own funding. An IPPOG collaboration structure is envisaged that would be similar to any other experimental collaboration as e.g. ATLAS or CMS, with CERN acting as host laboratory, and as legal host. An MoU between CERN and IPPOG is in preparation which will establish basic structures. IPPOG needs to be supported internationally through membership fees (cash, in-kind) for all its categories national delegates - experiments delegates - laboratory delegates - IPPOG supported activities need their own funding from various sources (which should not exclude direct funding through IPPOG in some cases).
