Pyramids of Egypt Pyramids of Egypt The only ancient wonder that still stands, the Pyramids of Egypt, are three pyramids at Giza, located outside modern Cairo. It's believed to have taken 100,000 laborers about 20 years to build the pharaoh Khufu pyramid. Many scholars think the pyramid shape was an important religious statement for the Egyptians. 4 BabylonBabylon The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were supposedly built by Nebuchadnezzar around 600 B.C. to please his queen, Amytis of Media. They are also associated with the mythical Assyrian queen Semiramis.Babylon The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Olympia Olympia The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was made of gold and ivory by the Greek sculptor Phidias in the 5th century B.C. In its right hand the statue held the figure of Nike (the goddess of victory) and in its left was a scepter "inlaid with every kind of metal..." which was topped with an eagle. 6 The Temple of Artemis (Diana) The Temple of Artemis (Diana) one of the largest and most complex temples built in ancient times. Artemis was the goddess of fertility and the hunt. The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was erected by Queen Artemisia in memory of her husband, King Mausolus of Caria in Asia Minor (now Turkey), who died in 353 B.C. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus stood above the city ruins for some 17 centuries. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

The Greek sculptor Chares built a giant bronze statue in honor of the sun god Helios. The Colossus attracted ships to Rhodes because, like the Pharos at Alexandria, it was a giant advertisement for the city. The Colossus of Rhodes

The Lighthouse of Alexandria The Lighthouse of Alexandria was built on the island of Pharos in the city's harbor. In ancient times it was a great help to ships trying to get through the rocky harbor entrance. Yet it was not a lighthouse in the modern sense, but rather a giant advertisement for Alexandria.
