2 L ISTENING & S PEAKING W AYS TO I NCREASE A BILITY Discussions Give a report Tell a story Recount an experience Create engaging audio recordings of stories or poems May add visual displays Speak in complete sentences when appropriate to provide details or clarification Speak clearly at an understandable pace

3 READING Fluency – reading accurately, quickly, and with expression Directly related to: Reading Comprehension Independent Reading Work Completion Vocabulary – knowing the meaning of the words in the passage or conversation Comprehension – understanding what the sentences and passages mean

4 W RITING New Common Core State Standards for Writing Curriculum starting this year (next year reading and math, also) We need to do a lot of writing – short bursts as well as longer projects We need to write in all subjects. We write in three forms: narrative, informative, and opinion. We need to build skills sequentially.

5 W HY IS W RITING E MPHASIZED N OW ? “In most cases, writing ability could be your ticket in... or it could be your ticket out.” “All employees must have writing ability. Everything is tracked. All instructions are written out. Manufacturing documentation, operating procedures, reporting problems, lab safety, waste-disposal operations—all have to be crystal clear. Hourly and professional staff go through serious training. They must be able to communicate clearly, relay information, do postings, and the like...” (A survey of business leaders) The best incoming college freshmen writers are those who do the most writing in high school (McQueen, Murray, and Evens 1963).

10 T HE T HIRD W RITING F ORM -N ARRATIVE - These are real or imagined experiences or events that are told with a natural sequence using a situation and characters with feelings, dialogue, and actions. See handouts for examples and writing standards from the Common Core State Standards.

11 W HERE TO FIND M ATERIALS Class Websites – fluency passages, spelling, calendar, etc. Class Website links such as UTIPS for testing and Houghton Mifflin for reading and math Homework Other

12 H OW TO H ELP AT H OME Listen to sight words Listen to fluency passages Read to child Have child read 20 minutes or more daily & report on green folder Play games with vocabulary words Talk about unusual words Play games with spelling words Have a time/place to write something every day HELP YOUR CHILD ENJOY STUDYING!
