Flashback 8-20-12 Convert interval notation to inequality notation. 1.[-2, 3]2. (-∞, 0) Convert inequality notation to interval notation. 3.-4 ≤ x ≤ 44. 2< x < 5 5. Give the interval and inequality notations for the following graph: -35

Joke of the day If you had 4 apples and 5 oranges in one hand and 6 apples and 7 oranges in the other, what would you have?

A: Very large hands.

Rules of Exponents Exponent is 0 Exponent is 1 Product of same base Quotient of same base Power to a power Quotient to a power Product to a power b 0 = 12 0 = 1 b 1 = b2 1 = 2 b m ∙b n = b m+n 2 5 2 6 = 2 30 b m /b n = b m-n 2 5 /2 2 = 2 3 (b m ) n = b mn (2 2 ) 3 = 2 6 (b/c) m = b m /c m ( 2/3 ) 3 = 2 3 /3 3 (bc) m = b m c m (3*4) 2 = 3 2 *4 2

You try Simplify (x 3 )(x 4 ) Simplify (x 2 ) 4 Simplify [(3x 4 y 7 z 12 ) 5 (–5x 9 y 3 z 4 ) 2 ] 0

Scientific Notation Gives us a way of working with very large or very small numbers. Only for positive numbers Form: c x 10 m where 1≤ c ≤ 9 and m is an integer

Examples 93,000,000 = 9.3 x 10 7 0.000 000 000 000 000 000 000 053 = 5.3 x 10 -23

Converting to decimal form  When the exponent on the 10 is positive, we have to move the decimal point to the right to get the decimal form.  When the exponent on the 10 is negative, we have to move the decimal point to the left to get the decimal form.

Examples 2.375 x 10 8 = 237,500,000 5.63 x 10 -15 = 0.000 000 000 000 005 63

So what? (370,000)(4,500,000,000)/18,000 = ( 3.7 x 10 5 )(4.5 x 10 9 )/(1.8 x 10 4 ) = (3.7 x 4.5 / 1.8)(10 5+9-4 )= (3.7 x 4.5 / 1.8)(10 10 )= 9.25 x 10 10

Exit Slip 1.Simplify X 3 y 2 X 2 y 4 2. Simplify (2,400)(130) 18,000 3. Simplify 3.2 x 10 7 1.6 x 10 5
