Definitions of the Day (DODs) 8.8 – Division Properties of Exponents Quotient Simplest Form

Definition: Quotient – The result obtained by dividing one quantity by another. Definition: Simplest Form (of expressions with exponents) – When you have reduced an expression as far as possible and all exponents are positive

What is another way to write 4 7 ? What is another way to write 4 4 ? Reduce the 4’s. How many 4’s do you have? Where? Rewrite the string of 4’s by using exponents. What might be a general rule for this process?

Dividing Powers with the Same Base If and m and n are integers, Attention!!! The bases must be the same!! Also, you may get a negative exponent.

Raising a Quotient to a Power If and n is an integer, Notice! Again, this is NOT the distributive property. You should raise each term to the given power!!

Simplify each expression

Your Turn!!

Sentence Frames 1.When dividing exponents with the same ___________ I need to ____________________ the exponents. 2.When raising a quotient to a power, I need to____________________________________________
