3 Background and Goals Goals:  to find solutions to reducing trash on campus.  To have a new environmentally friendly option for recycling and trash disposal  To increase the ability and reduce the cost for recycling over the long term

Compaction Features:  Cycle time: 41 seconds  IC processor controlled system senses trash level (fully automated)  3-color LED status lamps  GPRS wireless data radio for online monitoring C. Safety features:  Fully interlocked access doors protect and service personnel  Locked front waste removal door  Low-voltage system ( 12 Volts)

8 Schedule 1. Contact with the Department of Management and Finance to plan how many trash cans need to be replaced. 2. Contact with BigBelly Solar to request a quote 3. Find suitable place for trash compactors 4. Assign the employee responsible for monitoring the system.

9 Staffing Before  All of the janitorial crews empty waste bins.  Trash cans are required to empty daily.  There are five people working on the recycling team. After  Solar power compactors only need to be emptied five times a week => Labor saving  only need three people working on recycling team => Cost savings

10 Budget Current:  A desk side bin: $10.00  A large fiberglass: $500  A rubbermaid “ slim jim” in classroom: $100  Annual waste costs are $81,000

11 Budget (cont) The Big belly trash cans cost $4,000 per unit. Battery replacement cost $20.00 per year. Planning to install 2 recycling compactors outside and inside JSOM first. Total cost: $8,000 initially BigBelly Solar conducted a cost benefit analysis of using the compactors on Webster University's campus and estimated that the University could save up to $100,000 in ten years.
