 Did you know that if we didn’t have ancient Greeks we wouldn’t have doctors or hospitals?  Did you know that every doctor needs to say an oath called the Hippocratic oath?  Well if you didn’t you will know now.  Some people say it wasn’t the ancient Greeks that created the first medicine in fact all countries had their own type of cures.

 The first man who created medicine was:”Hippocrates”.  Born: 460 B.C.E.  Birth place: island of cos, Greece  Died: 377 B.C.E. well known for the doctors oath.  The oath: I promise to be honest to preserve life and to keep information of other patients private.

 For many years, the ancient Greeks thought that the gods and goddesses controlled health and sicknesses. They also thought that they were punishments from the gods.

 Medicine was very important to the Ancient Greeks. Ancient Greek Culture was such that a high need was placed upon healthy lifestyles of the people, this despite Ancient Greece being much different to the Greece of the World now.

 Medical practice in Ancient Greece, like Egypt, was based largely upon religious beliefs.  The Ancient Greeks though made major affects in medical knowledge. The works of Hippocrates and his followers led to several scientific facts being recorded for the first time, and perhaps more significantly the work of these philosophers began a tradition of studying the cause of disease rather than looking solely at the symptoms when prescribing a cure.

 The legacy of the Ancient Greek world on medical practice has been great. Hippocrates theory of the Four Humors was, for a long time, the basis upon which to develop medical reasoning. Like wise the methodology employed by the Greeks has, to a large extent, been retained and modified to form what we now consider to be conventional medicine.

 #1: medical reasoning: when you and your employer/ partner work together to find out what's wrong with a patient.  #2: methodology: a set or system of methods, principles, and rules for regulating a given discipline, as in the arts or sciences.

 The ancient Greeks used herbs for sicknesses such as the flu or infections they did work but they weren't as effective as the medicines we use today.  The also used castes they also were not as effective.  Some times when people had and infection that couldn’t be cured they chopped off that body part.

 Now you know who is Hippocrates.  You know all about the oath.  You know what types of tool were used then.  THANK YOU!
