International Conference on Bio-, Nano- and Space Technologies, E U & Science Centers Collaboration, Ljubljana, Slovenia March 10-12, 2008 Folie 9 > DLR in Space, Aeronautics, Transport and Energy > Rainer Scharenberg Large-scale facilities (1) Research aircraft, Research helicopters, Turbine test rigs, German Space Operations Center (GSOC), German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD).

International Conference on Bio-, Nano- and Space Technologies, E U & Science Centers Collaboration, Ljubljana, Slovenia March 10-12, 2008 Folie 10 > DLR in Space, Aeronautics, Transport and Energy > Rainer Scharenberg Large-scale facilities (2) Engine test rigs, Wind tunnels, Solar furnace, Solar fields, Autoclaves, Traffic tower.

International Conference on Bio-, Nano- and Space Technologies, E U & Science Centers Collaboration, Ljubljana, Slovenia March 10-12, 2008 Folie 11 > DLR in Space, Aeronautics, Transport and Energy > Rainer Scharenberg Projects with Russia using ISTC network boundary conditions DLR is a public organisation, which has to develop and to finance the German fundamental research and technology development for their fields of responsibility. Any cooperation has to be realized strictly without exchange of funds (In difference to the European Industry we are not allowed to pay for research work). Initiator of joint projects shall be the Russian/Ukrainian side, this is a limitation for our activity. The DLR International Cooperation department disposes of mobility funds for initiation of cooperation projects. Bearing a part of the Russian/Ukrainian travel costs – we could show our collaboration interest at ISTC/STCU.

International Conference on Bio-, Nano- and Space Technologies, E U & Science Centers Collaboration, Ljubljana, Slovenia March 10-12, 2008 Folie 12 > DLR in Space, Aeronautics, Transport and Energy > Rainer Scharenberg DLR – project: Welding residual stresses in T-joints and their impact on crack growth V. S. Pisarev, I. Odintsev, K. Zimmermann, G. Biallas Central Aero- Hydrodynamics Institute (TsAGI), 140180 Zhukovsky, Moscow reg., Russia Institute of Material Research, German Aerospace Centre DLR, D-51170 Cologne, Germany ISTC Project Title (for TsAGI): Stress determination on a base of advanced interferometric measurements of deformation response induced by local mechanical influence

International Conference on Bio-, Nano- and Space Technologies, E U & Science Centers Collaboration, Ljubljana, Slovenia March 10-12, 2008 Folie 13 > DLR in Space, Aeronautics, Transport and Energy > Rainer Scharenberg Temperatures well below the melting point Excellent tensile and fatigue strength No splatter, no fume Low energy consumption Low shrinkage No filler wire Simple preparation of the weld seam Good mechanical reproducibility No welder certification required Friction Stir Welding a technology for connecting metal structures, used by DLR against the main stream (composite materials)

International Conference on Bio-, Nano- and Space Technologies, E U & Science Centers Collaboration, Ljubljana, Slovenia March 10-12, 2008 Folie 14 > DLR in Space, Aeronautics, Transport and Energy > Rainer Scharenberg FSW T-joint as welded 4 mm

International Conference on Bio-, Nano- and Space Technologies, E U & Science Centers Collaboration, Ljubljana, Slovenia March 10-12, 2008 Folie 15 > DLR in Space, Aeronautics, Transport and Energy > Rainer Scharenberg Welding residual stresses (J. Ibsø,Ph.D. Thesis, Techn.Univ. Lyngby,Denmark, 1995)

International Conference on Bio-, Nano- and Space Technologies, E U & Science Centers Collaboration, Ljubljana, Slovenia March 10-12, 2008 Folie 16 > DLR in Space, Aeronautics, Transport and Energy > Rainer Scharenberg DLR measuring technology (strain gauges). Difference in strain before and after cutting Stringer Specimen

International Conference on Bio-, Nano- and Space Technologies, E U & Science Centers Collaboration, Ljubljana, Slovenia March 10-12, 2008 Folie 17 > DLR in Space, Aeronautics, Transport and Energy > Rainer Scharenberg 1-2 2-3

International Conference on Bio-, Nano- and Space Technologies, E U & Science Centers Collaboration, Ljubljana, Slovenia March 10-12, 2008 Folie 18 > DLR in Space, Aeronautics, Transport and Energy > Rainer Scharenberg Conclusions ISTC/STCU is a very convenient management instrument for cooperation with Russian and Ukrainian research Organisations (more for Ukrainian?). There is a really need for cooperation – especially in Aeronautics – to meet the European industrial requirements of the future (Association of European Research Establishments in Aeronautics (EREA) in the European Research Area). STCU could be very useful in the transformation process of the Ukrainian space industry and the process of military launcher utilization.
