5 She was Dr Sun Yat- sen ’ s wife. She was one of the top leaders in modern Chinese history. She concerned herself with welfare projects, especially the China Welfare Institute for women and children. Song Qingling (1893-1981), China

6 She was a Quaker. She helped improve prison conditions and gave prisoners work and education. Her work helped the Quakers get the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947. Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845), Britain

7 She was the only female monarch ( 君主 ) of China, and remains the most remarkable ( 非凡的 ), influential and mysterious woman in Chinese history. Empress Wu Zetian (624-705), Tang Dynasty

8 She was a doctor who became a specialist in women’s illnesses. She devoted all her life to medical work for Chinese women and children. Her work encouraged many other women to become doctors. Lin Qiaozhi (1901-1983), China

9 She helped found an international campaign to stop the making of landmines. She also worked hard to make as many countries as possible agree not to use them. She and her organization were given the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997. Jody Williams (1950- ), USA

10 She was an inventor and a scientist from Poland. She went to Paris and studied physics and chemistry there. She is the only woman scientist who was awarded two Nobel Prizes. On July 4, 1934, she died in Paris, killed by her own experiments. Marie Curie (1867-1934), France

11 As a young girl, she always wanted to study animals. She went to Africa and studied chimps instead of going to university. Her research showed the connections between chimps and human beings. She works to protect chimps everywhere. Jane Goodall (1934- ), Britain

12 She was a girl from the countryside who dressed as a man and went to fight for the French. She helped drive the English out of France. She was caught and put to death by the English. Joan of Arc (1412-1431), France

13 She was a much beloved actress. She became very popular with her role in Roman Holiday in 1953. This film turned out to be a smashing success as she won an Oscar as Best Actress. In 1988, she became a special ambassador to the United Nations UNICEF fund helping children in Latin America and Africa. Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993), Britain

15 Both in the past and at present, women contributed to world culture in many different ways. There are women writers, educators, scientists, heads of state, politicians, artists, entertainers, and others.
