When Do We Use the Simple Past? We use the simple past to talk about an action in the past that happened at a specific time. I watched Transformers last night. NowFuturePast Example

I have done my homework yesterday.  I did my homework yesterday.  Example (2) We use Simple Past with adverbs of time, e.g. yesterday, two weeks ago.

When Do We Use the Present Perfect? We use the present perfect for actions in the past but we don’t say exactly when. NowFuturePast I have seen Transformers. Example ?Time

Please write 5 things that you have done in the past, and 1 thing that you haven’t. –Ex: I have lived in Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Italy. I have gone snorkeling. I have seen the Blue Mosque. I have visited Germany. I have taken a tour of Beijing. I have never eaten nakji.

Another Use for the Present Perfect The present perfect is also used to talk about actions or events that start in the past and continue to the present and possibly to the future. Example I have lived in America for 2 years. NowFuturePast 2 years ago I started living in America Now I still live in America Time living in America (2 years).

For and Since with the Present Perfect For is used to describe a length or period of time. (How long?) Since is used to describe a period of time from a specific point in the past up to the present. (When start…until now.) I have been a teacher for three years. I have been a teacher for nine months. I have been a teacher for seven minutes. I have been a teacher since 2008. I have been a teacher since January. I have been a teacher since 6am today.

For can be used in any tense. Since (as a preposition of time) can only be used in the perfect tenses. Cathy will love Heathcliff for the rest of her life. I travelled around the world for six months in 2007. They haven’t seen each other for 10 years. Gary lives in Korea since 2008. Gary has lived in Korea since 2008. Simple present tense Can’t use “since” in the simple present tense Present perfect tense
