3 Primary Two – Developing First Level Number and Number Processes Rote count 20, 50, 100 Counting patterns. Count in 2s 5s 10s Recognise figures to 100 Locate numbers on a 100 square Add and subtract numbers to 20 (mentally) Identify doubles within 20 Use 1p 2p 5p 10p coins to pay for items. Calculate change from 20p then 50p - maths in a context

4 Primary Three – Consolidating First Level Number and Number Processes Rote count to 100 from any given number – forwards and backwards Order up to 5 numbers within 100. Give nos. before/ after Write all figures to 100. Identify number patterns on 100 sq. Identify even / odd numbers Mentally add and subtract 1 digit no. to 2 digit no numbers. (36+7) Complete written calculations with 2 digit numbers (tens and units) Addition to 100 without then with carrying a ten Subtraction from 99 without then with exchanging a ten Use 2op 50p then £1 coins to pay for items. Calculate change from 50p then £1 - maths in a context Introduce times tables - 2x, 5x,10x then 3x and 4x Introduce division by 2, 5.10 then 3 and 4 (without remainders)

5 Oral / Mental Maths Strategies Number and Number Processes Big Maths Beat That – ‘Learn Its’ and weekly challenge in terms 2 and 4. P2- 30 seconds.(17 sums) P3- 90 seconds (40 sums) Switcher facts - eg. 7 + 6 =13, 6 + 7 =13 Fact Families 7 + 6 = 13 6 + 7 = 13 13 - 7 = 6 13 - 6 = 7 Jigsaw numbers Whiteboards - show me ‘brainscanners’ Getting pupils to explain their answers/ strategies used Estimate / Calculate / Check – a reasonable answer?

6 How can you help at home? Practise ‘Learn Its’ / Times tables (P3) with your child. Ask them to give switcher fact/ fact family of a given sum. Numbers before / after, 10 more than 26, 34 etc Frequently ask them to tell time (digital and analogue) Time - o’ clock / half past (P2) - quarter past / to (P3) Provide opportunities to count out amounts of money / calculate change. Identify and use 3D shape names eg shopping items etc. Websites: Mad 4 Maths, BBC Bitesize ( first level), Woodlands Junior School maths Zone ICT games
