1 Intensified class - Hw#3 & hw#44 »use the following slides to guide you through the activities you need to complete for these homework assignments. »hw#3- set-up notebook & vocabulary for unit I »hw#4- basic facts regarding Syrian civil war

Setting up YOUR notebook FRONT Cover – (with sharpie or make an insert) –Name (first & last) –Period ?? –Mrs. Young 3017 Inside set-up: Page 1: write your name on the title page Pg 2: Syllabus (tape/glue/staple this in or hole punch) Pg 3: Practical Notes –Later in this powerpoint you’ll take notes - or you can print them out and put them in your notebook, either way, make sure you understand the content for a quiz. Pg 4: Geography –Use online maps or atlas to test your knowledge….. You need to know where ALL these countries are ☺  you do NOT have to print and label the maps, if you are confident in your geography skills.

Use these pictures as a guide… Page 1 page 2 Period 3- you will get the “page 1” on Monday Period 3/5 – I collected your syllabus, but you’ll get it back to put in here.

Pg 3 Practical Notes Three important skills to master to understand History. Take notes on the following slides so that you understand skills such as reading/writing Roman Numerals, Timeline, and Centuries

I. Roman Numerals I = 1 V = 5 X = 10 XX = 20 L = 50 C = 100 D = 500 M = 1,000 left right -minus + add _________ VALUE __________ examples: IX = 9 XI = 11 XVI= 16 CM= 900 XV = 25 DX= 510 I = 1 II = 2 III = 3 IV = 4 V = 5 VI = 6 VII = 7 VIII = 8 IX = 9 X = 10

II. Timelines B.C. = Before Christ A.D = anno domini (Latin meaning year of our Lord) Or BCE = Before the Common Era C.E.= common era 2014 BC2014 AD 800 BCE800 CE Like a timeline in math, negative numbers get “bigger” as they move left of and bigger as they move right, but are a mirror of one another. “Negative” on a historical timeline is represented by BC or BCE after the number and the “positive” side has AD or CE after the number BC and BCE explain the SAME time period, as does AD and CE. So what’s the difference? BC & AD represent the Christian calendar and thus are religious BCE & CE are secular or non-religious ways to refer to world events.

III. Century vs year If you lived in year 1-100CE you lived in the 1 st century. But if you were born in year 104 you are already in the 2 nd century and so on and so forth. So if you are born in 1999 you were born in the 20 th century and if born in 2000 you were born in the 21 st century.

Century vs Year Century Year +1 - 1 So if something happened in the 17 th century, then we are talking about events in the years 1600s. If something happened in 1450 it’s the 15 th century 850 is the 9 th century. 12 th century is the 1100s

Geography You need to know where the following 46 countries/regions are located on a map. Americas: -Mexico -Brazil -Canada -Cuba -Haiti -Peru -Bolivia Europe: -England/U.K. -Portugal -Spain -France -Belgium -Poland -Russia -Italy -Austria -Germany Asia: -Japan - China -India -Pakistan -Iraq -Afghanistan -Vietnam -Indonesia -Philippines -Taiwan -Saudi Arabia -Iran -Turkey -Israel Africa: -Egypt -South Africa -Ghana -Kenya -Congo -Liberia -Ethiopia Regions: -Balkans -Middle East -Latin America -Baltic States -Kashmir -Siberia -Iberian
