3. Hawthorne’s Employment 1836 - He edited for the American Magazine of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge, a Boston magazine. 1825 - 1836 - Wrote several short stories and a novel, but was forced to seek another way of employing himself because he was not making enough money.

Themes in Hawthorne’s Works Alienation: a character is in a state of isolation because of self-cause, or a combination of both Initiation: involves the attempts of an alienated character to get rid of his isolated condition Problem of Guilt: a character’s sense of guilt forced by the puritanical heritage or by society Pride: Hawthorne treats pride as evil. He illustrates the following aspects of pride in various characters: physical pride, spiritual pride, and intellectual pride.
