GALILEAN RELATIVITY Projectile motion The Principle of Relativity

NON-ZERO INITIAL SPEED v t v0v0 v 0 + at v = v 0 + at x = v AV t = ½(v 0 + v)t x = ½(v 0 + v 0 + at)t = v 0 t + 1/2at 2

EXAMPLE: THROW ROCK UP Then v = v 0 -gt Choose upward to be positive displacement and speed. (This choice is arbitrary) Let v 0 = 5m/s and g = 10m/s 2 When does the rock get to the top of its motion? v = 0 = 5 – 10t so 5 = 10t and t = 0.5s How high did it go? y = v 0 t – 1/2gt 2 = 5(0.5) – 5(0.5) 2 = 2.5 – 1.25 = 1.25m

QUESTION For the rock just thrown, what was its acceleration at the very top of its motion? A.+ 10 m/s 2 B.+ 5 m/s 2 C.0 m/s 2 D.- 5 m/s 2 E.- 10 m/s 2

SAME QUESTION USING INCLINED PLANE Cart on track with motion sensor. Start it initially moving upwards. This is analogous to throwing the rock up. v0v0

DROP ROCK FROM TOP OF BUILDING Here we extend our earlier equations by adding an initial displacement y = y 0 – 1/2gt 2 Let y 0 = 50m. y = 50 – 5t 2 When does it hit? Answer: when y = 0 0 = 50 – 5t 2 so 5t 2 = 50 and t 2 = 10 so t = 3.2 s

ROLL AND FALL

SUPERPOSITION x = v 0 t y = y 0 – 1/2gt 2 y = y 0 – [g/2v 0 2 ]x 2 Parabola This is called projectile motion.

EXAMPLE A building is 20m high. A rock is thrown off it horizontally with speed 15 m/s. How far away does the rock land? Time in the air: y = y 0 – 1/2gt 2 = 20 – 5t 2 = 0 t 2 = 4, t = 2 seconds. x = v 0 t = 15*2 = 30m

GALILEAN RELATIVITY Person on a moving ship drops a rock. They see it fall straight down to land at their feet. Someone on shore sees the rock continue to move horizontally as it falls, and says the trajectory is parabolic. Another observer on another ship sees it move horizontally with a different speed and sees a different parabola. They all see it land at the same time. Galileo concluded that the horizontal motion cannot influence the vertical motion, and that what takes place on the ship is independent of the ship’s motion. He argued this applies to all physical and biological processes. The same principle applies to what takes place on a moving Earth.
