Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics Nationwide, there is a shortage of computer science graduates! 70% of all STEM jobs will be in computer science which equates to 750,000 new jobs! Computer programmers, software engineering and other computer related professions will be among the fastest growing occupations, with employment opportunities expected to increase 19% between 2010 and 2020. The average salary for computer science majors is approximately $89,000.

What is Computer Science? Computer science is the systematic study of computing systems and computation. Computer scientists are problem solvers, trained to design and implement software solutions to problems.

JOBS Available? Programmers Software engineers Software developers Designers Video game developers Architects who create software Graduates can pursue a master’s degree in Computer Science or other closely related fields

Tools and Technology used at ECU Programming languages – C++ – Java – Others Hardware construction and operation – PC workstations Operating Systems – Windows – Linux Software Engineering -Rational Rose -UML Database Environment -Oracle -MySQL

Advisory Board The Department has advisory board members from several of the world’s top companies including, but not limited to:

Certificate in Computer Game Development The certificate prepares students to design and develop computer games and simulations. Students acquire technical skills in real-time rendering and content creation, and work with concepts behind the development of story, character, environment, level design, user interface and sound augmentation. Preparatory courses: CSCI 2310/2311 CSCI 3200 or 3300 Advanced courses: CSCI 3550 (Intro to Comp Game Development) CSCI 3800 (Intro to Comp Graphics) OR CSCI 4530 (Comp Networks and Internet) OR CSCI 5800 (Art. Intelligence) CSCI 4550 (Comp Game Development)

Student Organization ECU Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) – Advisor: Dr. Qin Ding – ACM is the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society

FAQ’s Is there a computer requirement? What type of computer is recommended? What processor speed is recommended? What is the difference between Computer Science and Information Computer Technology? Are the job opportunities different for the B.A. and B.S. degrees in Computer Science? (Curriculum differences will be explained by your advisor) If I need help in a class are there tutors available?
