2. Goals for the Program Promote leadership in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) through contributions in the medical education literature. Foster the development of a cadre of academic leaders who can model best practices in teaching within undergraduate, clinical, and graduate programs. Enhance depth and breadth of faculty expertise to support teaching and learning in medicine.

3. How it Works One or more courses (2 credit hours each) or 12 credit hours to earn a Certificate in Medical Education from the School of Education at VCU

Courses in the TiME Program Required to earn the Certificate Instructional Strategies Curriculum Design Adult Learning Theory and Practice Teaching as Scholarship in Medical Education Electives (Choose two) Performance Feedback and Simulation Group and Team Facilitation Digital Media Technologies for Teaching in Medicine Reflective Practice

5. Course Descriptions Instructional Strategies Provides knowledge and skills in strategies for teaching large and small groups using discussion and team-based learning, as well as teaching in clinical settings during rounds and at bedside. Curriculum Design Introduces principles and practices for designing a course or unit of instruction, including a rotation experience. Focus is on constructing learner- centered objectives, assessment strategies, and selection of appropriate instructional strategies.

6. Course Descriptions Theory and Practice of Adult Learning An overview of major adult learning theories applicable to medical education and how these form the basis for practical aspects of teaching and learning in medicine, including self- directed learning and helping novices acquire skills and knowledge to build expertise. Teaching as Scholarship in Medical Education Focuses on the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) in medical education research using qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods study designs. Includes IRB proposal preparation and the basics of scholarly writing for publication.

7. Elective Options Performance Feedback and Simulation Introduces use of simulated learning experiences in preparing healthcare professionals for patient care. Emphasizes facilitation skills needed to provide effective feedback in small group debrief experiences. Hands-on experiential course! Group and Team Facilitation Explores group and team facilitation including leadership, member roles, group development, team performance, and methods for dealing with conflict. Faculty will also explore methods for improving their own group membership functioning.

8. Elective Options Digital Media Technologies for Teaching in Medicine Introduces faculty to use of Web 2.0 digital media technologies that are creating revolutionary changes in how we think about teaching and learning in the 21 st century. Provides an opportunity to learn strategies for using digital and social media in preclinical and clinical settings. Reflective Practice in Medical Education Explores reflective practice including the educator’s role in developing trainees as reflective practitioners and the role of reflection in one’s own professional development. Introduces narrative medicine as a reflective practice.

9. How do you pay for a TiME course? VCU-paid faculty may use their tuition waiver benefits to cover the costs of courses. Other faculty who teach for the School of Medicine are encouraged to seek tuition assistance benefits through their home institutions. Up to two courses per semester (full-time). If employee withdraws after the deadline / fails to complete the course / leaves the University / earns an unsatisfactory grade, tuition waiver is revoked and employee becomes responsible for tuition.

10. Application Process Upon University approval of the Certificate in Medical Education program, faculty will need to apply to the School of Education to earn the Certificate. Faculty member completes University Tuition Waiver form and In-State tuition form (if needed). Faculty member obtains a letter of support from department or division chair. Faculty member completes TiME application form and submits a 1-page letter of interest / reasons for wanting to join the program.
