1 How Do We Get from Adopt to Adapt?* Dr. Patricia McGee TCCTA 2007 * Denotes references in ‘notes’ view

2 Reach! What is the urgency?

3 The “new” learner*? Are your students…. Digital natives? “Every time I go to school I have to power down.” Digital immigrants? Digital foreigners?

4

5 The “new” graduate*? The percentage of college graduates deemed proficient in prose literacy has actually declined from 40 to 31 percent in the past decade. Employers report repeatedly that many new graduates they hire are not prepared to work, lacking the critical thinking, writing and problem-solving skills needed in today’s workplaces.

6

7 “… every citizen should be able to access the education and training that they need, at any time in their lives, and when and where they need it.” (Bates, 2001)*

8 Shifts in learning environments Not just in class Not just via the Internet Not just on a computer

9 The “new” academy*? Environments. e-mail, WebCT, Blogs, Wikis, discussion forums, gaming, shopping… Strategies. Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), WebQuests, Webliography… Activities. Practice, inquiry, observation, debate… Assessments. Digital papers, Power Point™ Presentations, Web Pages, Communities of Practice…

10 Blended - Hybrid*

11 The “old” instructor? What is your style of teaching*? Does your style transfer and translate to/through technology?

12 Adoption to Adaptation* 1.I know it’s there but…. 2.I’m kind of interested in that thing I saw… 3.Hmm, I may have to change what I am doing. 4.I sure am spending a lot of time managing these new strategies. 5.Is what I am doing really helping students? 6.I bet I can adapt from what others are doing. 7.Gee, my ideas may work - I am teaching differently.
