How do I Live? Life Processes of Plants

Objectives of Todays Lesson explanation of the process of photosynthesis using the formula for photosynthesis explanation of the process of respiration using the formula for respiration identification of the chemical compounds involved in photosynthesis and respiration explanation of the importance of photosynthesis and respiration to both plant and animal life.

SOLs Covered In Today’s Lesson English 7.6 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of nonfiction texts. Use prior and background knowledge as a context for new learning. Use text structures to aid comprehension. Identify an author’s organizational pattern, using textual clues, such as transitional words and phrases. Draw conclusions and make inferences about explicit and implied information. Differentiate between fact and opinion. Identify the source, viewpoint, and purpose of a text. Describe how word choice and language structure convey an author’s viewpoint. Identify the main idea. Summarize text identifying supporting details. Identify cause-and-effect relationships. Organize and synthesize information for use in written formats. Use reading strategies to monitor comprehension throughout the reading process. Mathematics 7.4 The student will solve single-step and multistep practical problems, using proportional reasoning. Science LS.3 The student will investigate and understand that living things show patterns of cellular organization. Key concepts include cells, tissues, organs, and systems; and patterns of cellular organization and their relationship to life processes in living things. LS.5 The student will investigate and understand the basic physical and chemical processes of photosynthesis and its importance to plant and animal life. Key concepts include energy transfer between sunlight and chlorophyll; transformation of water and carbon dioxide into sugar and oxygen; and photosynthesis as the foundation of virtually all food webs.

What is the definition of photosynthesis? Photosynthesis is a chemical change that produces food in green plants. During photosynthesis, carbon dioxide, gas, and water are combined to produce sugar. Sunlight supplies the energy for the chemical change.

What elements are necessary for photosynthesis? CO2 = carbon dioxide H2O = water light = sunlight chlorophyll = green in plants C6H12O6 = sugar (glucose) O2 = oxygen

Why is photosynthesis important? – It is the most important chemical process in the atmosphere. – It allows plants to make their own food. – It provides oxygen for animals. – It makes complex sugars, starches, fats, and proteins.

What is the equation for photosynthesis?

What is the definition of respiration? Respiration is a process by which living cells take in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide.

When does respiration occur? Respiration occurs during both day and night.

What is the formula for respiration? C6H12O6 + 6O2  6CO2 + 6H2 O + heat

Why is respiration important? Respiration uses the sugars and starches produced by photosynthesis and converts them into energy.

Review What is photosynthesis? What is respiration? How are the life processes of plants similar to animals? What makes respiration in plants different from the same process in animals?
