Photosynthesis How do you maximize the oxygen is being produced?

Big Idea Students know plants use carbon dioxide and energy from sunlight to build molecules of sugar and release oxygen.

The Process of Photosynthesis 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O  C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2

Focus Question Write a testable question you can investigate about photosynthesis. Write a testable question you can investigate about photosynthesis. Which type of plant leaf produces the most oxygen during photosynthesis? Which type of plant leaf produces the most oxygen during photosynthesis? How does the amount light exposure affect how much oxygen is produced during photosynthesis? How does the amount light exposure affect how much oxygen is produced during photosynthesis? How does the concentration of CO2 affect photosynthesis? How does the concentration of CO2 affect photosynthesis?

Procedure 1.Prepare baking soda solution (.2% &.4%). 2.Add 1 drop of liquid soap to the solution. Try to avoid suds. 3.Use a hole punch to cut at least 10 uniform leaf disks avoiding major veins. 4.Remove the piston of the syringe and place the leaf disks into the syringe barrel. Replace the piston and push until only a small volume of air remains in the barrel. 5.Pull a small volume of baking soda/soap solution into the syringe. 6.Holding a finger over the syringe opening, draw back the piston to create a vacuum. While holding the vacuum, swirl the leaf disks to suspend them in the solution. Lift your finger off the opening. 7.You may need to repeat the vacuum solution until all of the disks sink.

Testing Using the heat lamp, you can test to see how many disks float and sink at time intervals of 1 minute. The number of disks that float is proportional to the amount of oxygen being produced. Construct a table and record data.

Conclusions Use the conclusion template to write a draft of a conclusion about your findings.
