Using particle model LESSON 6&7

 LO- Show understanding by explaining a chemical reaction using the particle model.  Success criteria  Level 6 – Identify strengths & weaknesses of other models  Level 5 – explain the particle model of a mixture using diagrams and scientific words in paragraphs  Level 4 – to use the particle model to describe a gas using scientific words in sentences By the end of the lesson I will be able to: Using particle model

Solid, liquid, gas?? Can you draw the following states of matter on your mini whiteboard??

States of matter Solid

States of matter gas

States of matter Liquid

Density

Particle model Using your bits of magnesium, iron & oxygen - model what the particles would look like out of playdoh Hint think about whether they are elements or not & whether they are solid, liquids & gas

Particle model Now that you have made your reactants think about how the products would be formed and show this using your Playdoh.

Drawing the model Now you have modelled your reactants and products. Draw them in your ex. book.

Writing word equations Magnesium + oxygen =_____ _____ reactant + reactant products Iron + oxygen =_____ _____ Copper + Oxygen= ________ ______

Writing a word equation Abbey reacted silver metal with oxygen in the air. Black silver oxide was formed Write a word equation showing the reactants and product formed

CSI Peer assessment LESSON 7&8

MgO CuO NaCl H 2 O Look at these compounds What elements do they contain? Mg O Cu O Na Cl H O H

Learning objective : To write an explanation that demonstrates scientific understanding of the reaction of iron with sulphur Success Criteria Level 6 – Explain using a model in logical paragraphs what happens when a metal reacts with an acid using symbol equations where possible Level 5 – Explain using a model what happens when a metal is added to an acid using word equations where possible Level 4 – Describe using sentence what happens when a metal is added to an acid Level 3 – Recall what happens when a metal reacts with an acid Reacting a metal with a non-metal 18/11/11

Sulphur and iron reaction. iron + Sulphur Iron Sulphide + Fe S S

What do we need when writing an explanation

L3 L4L5L6 I can use simple scientific words with help I often use short sentences or one-word answers I can add labels to diagrams I can represent things using simple models I use more complicated scientific words Uses simple scientific words correctly I can annotate diagrams & text I use paragraphs I use diagrams to help explain I use a model to help explain ‘familiar’ events I use process & concept words accurately I use logically constructed paragraphs I use annotated diagrams in my explanation Uses models to help explain new & complex situations I begin to use simple models to help describe I use full sentences

Iron and sulphur reaction. Write an explanation that demonstrates scientific understanding of the reaction of iron with sulphur using particle diagrams and paragraphs. Using your task sheet aim to achieve your target:- Key words:- element, compound, mixture, metal, non-metal, reaction.

Peer assessment Using your success ladder can you give a level and use WWW and EBI to mark your partners model
