4 achievethecore.org Making the Shifts by Sandra Alberti Final Word Dialogue 1.Read the article and write the most meaningful text on an card. 2.Identify the person with the largest watch face. 3.That person reads the sentence, phrase, or word that he/she wrote down but does Not comment on it. 4.In round robin-order other group members comment on the selected item without cross-talk. 5.The originating person gets... “final word” by restating, summarizing why he/she chose the piece of text. 6.Repeat the pattern until everyone gets to have the final word 4

5 5 achievethecore.org 3 2 1 ACTIVITY Reflecting on the Shifts Choose ELA/Literacy and/or Mathematics Complete the 3 2 1 handout Be Prepared to share out 5

6 achievethecore.org You have just purchased an expensive Grecian urn and asked the dealer to ship it to your house. He picks up a hammer, shatters it into pieces, and explains that he will send one piece a day in an envelope for the next year. You object; he says “don’t worry, I’ll make sure that you get every single piece, and the markings are clear, so you’ll be able to glue them all back together. I’ve got it covered.” Absurd, no? But this is the way many school systems require teachers to deliver mathematics to their students; one piece (i.e. one standard) at a time. They promise their customers (the taxpayers) that by the end of the year they will have “covered” the standards. ~Excerpt from The Structure is the Standards Phil Daro, Bill McCallum, Jason Zimba 6

11 achievethecore.org Examples of Metrics ELA/LiteracyMathematics Classroom Materials and Instructional Resources Reading lists are appropriately balanced between nonfiction and literary text. Materials are focused... ERASE! Teacher Knowledge and Practice At least 80% of questions are text-dependent. Teachers have a deep understanding of the major work of their grade. Student WorkStudent work demonstrates close encounters with text - demanding evidence through writing. Student work demonstrates fluency and deep understanding in the major work of the grade. 11

Consider what your school has done, will do, and needs to do in order to effectively implement the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards. Then, develop your “garage sale” list. Not for Sale – positive initiatives/items your school has begun that you would like to keep Sold or Barter – initiatives/items that your school has begun that need some changing before you are ready to keep Garbage Can – initiatives/items your school has begun that are not working well or are of no use in your school. These items need to be thrown out. 13
