1 演講公告 Dr. Fengduo Hu Abstract : In the last decade CD-quality digital audio has essentially replaced analog audio and resulted in a digital revolution. Despite the advance of the Internet and wireless communications, digital audio faced serious challenges due to reduced channel bandwidth, limited storage capacity, and low cost requirements. These challenges have motivated further research in advanced audio compression. Several international compression standards have been adopted in the commercial world. A good example is MP3. This seminar includes two parts. In part 1, the psychoacoustic principles of audio perception are presented first. The time-to-frequency mapping techniques are discussed. Then the two most commonly used audio coders, subband coder and transform coder, are reviewed. Finally, evaluation methodologies for audio codec are described. In part 2, a brief introduction to MPEG audio coding standards family and their applications and history is presented. This is followed by a detailed description of the MP3 encoding and decoding schemes. Biography : Fengduo Hu received the M.S. and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York, USA, in 1988 and 1990, respectively. Fengduo Hu received the M.S. and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York, USA, in 1988 and 1990, respectively. During 1991-1992, he was a Research Scientist at Entropic Speech Inc, Cupertino, California, where he worked on low bit rate speech coders and echo cancellers. From 1993 to 1994, He was with Zilog Inc, Campell, CA, where he worked on DSP algorithms and chip architecture design for digital cordless phone, digital telephone answering device, and PC audio. From 1995 to 2000, he was a senior staff engineer and project leader at SONY, San Jose, CA, where he was in charge of the design of audio sub-system for SONY ’ s first non-linear editing system. He also led the development and design of SONY ’ s MPEG-2 audio/ Dolby AC3 encoder chip for DVR applications. From 2001 to 2002, he was a senior staff software engineer at iVAST, Santa Clara, CA, where he was responsible for the development of MPEG-4 audio codec and the specification of APIs for MPEG-4 authoring tool and player. Since Feb. 2003, he has been with ITE USA as a senior staff firmware engineer and project leader, responsible for the development of audio compression algorithms for personal audio applications.
