When, What time and *Why

Revision: Two different types of questions  Yes-No Questions: Any statement can be converted into a yes / no question with 吗 (ma). You could think of 吗 (ma) as being like a question mark you say out loud. So the basic structure is: statement sentence + 吗 ? (statement) (He likes sports.) (question) (Does he like sports?)

Revision: Two different types of questions  Questions with WH-words(WH-questions):  In Chinese, using question words is a lot easier. You simply place a question word in the place of the thing you want to ask about. Nothing needs to be rearranged. E.g.

1.When 什么 时 候 Shénme shíhòu  什么 时 候 is less specific, the answer could be: 2 hours late, next week, 3 days ago, tomorrow, etc. (When do you start your holiday?) (I start my holiday after 3 weeks.)

2. What time 几点 J ǐ di ǎ n  几点 , as the 点 word implies, requires that your answer include a specific time, expressed in with reference to the clock, as in "five thirty pm" “ten minutes past six". (What time do you go to play basketball ?) (I’ll go at 3:30.)

*3. Why 为 什么 Wèi shé me  Same use as ‘why’ in English. We often use 因 为 (Yīn wèi, because) to answer. (Chídào)? (Why are you late?) (Because I slept in.)

4.Exercise  Circle the question words of the following questions and translate into English.
