3 What is status? Social Structure- underlying patterns of relationships within the group Status-a position a person occupies within a social structure Ascribed status: a status one is born into Achieved status: a position that is earned or chosen Status set: all of the statuses one occupies at a particular time Master status: status that affects most other aspects of a person’s life: it is who you are.

5 Dramaturgical Analysis Uses the analogy of theater to analyze social behavior. –People are viewed as actors occupying roles as they play out life’s drama –People use impression management : ways that people use revelation and concealment to make a favorable impression others

6 role: an expected behavior associated with a particular status Role performance: actual conduct or behavior involved in carrying out a role. Usually involves social interaction. Social interaction: process of influencing each other as people relate. Role conflict: condition in which the performance of a role in one status interferes with the performance of a role in another status. Role strain: condition in which the roles of a single status are inconsistent or conflicting. Often one must consider which role is most important.
