Learning Objectives What is a spreadsheet and what is the difference between a spreadsheet and a worksheet? Start Excel, open an existing spreadsheet, create a new workbook Select cells, enter text, numbers, and dates in a worksheet Cell alignment and data ranges Preview and print a worksheet Close a workbook and exit Excel

The Ribbon The Ribbon contains multiple tabs, each with several groups of commands. You can add your own tabs that contain your favorite commands.

What is the difference between a workbook and a worksheet? Workbook - Each new workbook comes with three worksheets, like pages in a document. Worksheet – Worksheets are divided into columns, rows, and cells; the grid seen when a workbook is opened; worksheets are often referred to as spreadsheets.

Entering text, numbers, and dates in a worksheet Text is a label. Words can not be calculated. Numbers are values to be calculated. Numbers can also be used as a label; for example, your cell phone number, student ID number, etc. A cell may display ##### when it contains data that has a number format wider than the column width. Dates may be entered directly into a cell or as a function, more on that later!

Cut, Copy, and Paste To move information, use cut. To cut an object in Excel, you can use the scissors icon on the home ribbon or CTRL X. To replicate information, use copy. To copy an object, use the paper icon on the home ribbon or CTRL C. To paste your information, use the clipboard icon or CTRL V.

Closing a Workbook and Quitting Excel Closing the file and quitting Excel will keep the task bar uncluttered. Closing the Workbook window will not close the Excel window. Click Close under the File tab to close a workbook. Close Excel by choosing Exit from the File tab menu list.
