CALL TO WORSHIP Lay Reader ~ Cheryl Lanter L: In the midst of life’s storms, God is there. P: What have we to fear? L: In the darkness and terror, God is with us. P: Of whom shall we be afraid? L: Rise up, people of God, for you are loved and saved. ALL: Thanks be to God who cares deeply for us. Amen.

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God 110 1. A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (Verse 1) WORDS: Martin Luther, ca. 1529; trans. by Frederick H. Hedge, 1853 (Ps. 46), CCLI 1110948 For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; his craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal.

2. Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (Verse 2) Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he; Lord Sabaoth, his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle.

3. And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (Verse 3) The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure; one little word shall fell him.

4. That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; the Spirit and the gifts are ours, thru him who with us sideth. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (Verse 4) Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill; God’s truth abideth still; his kingdom is forever.

OPENING PRAYER (Unison) Lay Reader ~ Cheryl Lanter The worst storms, Jesus, are the ones caused by our fear, when we grow afraid of losing our power, or we grow suspicious of the power of others, when we refuse to acknowledge your mysterious authority; Yet, it's in the storm that we find our capacity to love. In releasing our weak claim to power and opening to your reign,

we discover a new way of seeing ourselves - as called and useful and beloved - and the other, whoever they may be - as dignified and precious and beloved. Here in the storm, Jesus, we need you, and we need each other, and the love you give us to share, leads us through sacrifice and self- giving to peace and calm, if only we will lose our hold on fear. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READING ~ MARK 35-41 Lay Reader ~ Cheryl Lanter Jesus stops a storm 35 Later that day, when evening came, Jesus said to them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the lake.” 36 They left the crowd and took him in the boat just as he was. Other boats followed along.

37 Gale-force winds arose, and waves crashed against the boat so that the boat was swamped. 38 But Jesus was in the rear of the boat, sleeping on a pillow. They woke him up and said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re drowning?” 39 He got up and gave orders to the wind, and he said to the lake, “Silence! Be still!”

Leader: Word of God for the People of God. People: Thanks be to God. The wind settled down and there was a great calm. 40 Jesus asked them, “Why are you frightened? Don’t you have faith yet?” 41 Overcome with awe, they said to each other, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!”
