2 Types of Poetry Cinquain – A five line poem with a specific syllable count for each line: 2-4-6-8-2. Also, this style has a stressed syllable on every second syllable. Concrete Poetry – poetry that expresses meaning though the words and the way the poem is shaped Free Verse – Poetry that is not tied to any specific poetic form Haiku – Traditional Japanese poetry written in 3 short lines with the syllable pattern 5-7-5 Limerick – a funny poem with a strong beat. 3 Elements of Poetry Verse – one line of a poem Stanza – Lines grouped together, like a paragraph Line Break – The line of text ends Meter – a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables Rhyme – words that sound the same, often found at the end of lines Rhythm – the “beat” of the poem I Tried to Take a Selfie by Kenn Nesbitt I tried to take a selfie when I was all alone. I never should have done it. It broke my mobile phone. I guess I'm not so pretty. I thought that I was cuter. I snapped one with my laptop and busted the computer. I cracked my father's camera. My mother's iPad too. This shouldn't be so difficult. I don't know what to do. At last I got a selfie; perhaps the worst one yet. I posted it online today. It broke the Internet. 4 Where the Sidewalk Ends There is a place where the sidewalk ends And before the street begins, And there the grass grows soft and white, And there the sun burns crimson bright, And there the moon-bird rests from his flight To cool in the peppermint wind. Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black And the dark street winds and bends. Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And watch where the chalk-white arrows go To the place where the sidewalk ends. Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go, For the children, they mark, and the children, they know The place where the sidewalk ends.

5 Free Verse Free Verse is an “open form of poetry.” Does not use consistent rhyme or meter patterns. Instead it follows the “natural” rhythm of speech Poets choose to write in free verse because they have more freedom to express themselves since they are not held to any “rules” that govern other poetry styles.
