Temistocle Despina Luciana

Short background The Candida gender is represented by dimorphic-like fungi can shift from yeast to pseudomycelial state, depending on the environmental conditions of the host. exception - Candida glabrata which is an anamorphic species. Candida and especially Candida albicans colonizes the oral mucosa and becomes invasive when the immune system most of the oral-maxillofacial conditions are associated with Candida.

Purpose The qualitative and quantitative assessment of yeast colonization of the oral cavity in patients with oro-maxillo-facial (OMF) conditions the establishment of an association between the different contributing factors and colonization. Yeast oral colonization Smoking and Alcohol Oral hygiene OMF conditions and treatment Age

Material and methods The study was conducted on a sample of 70 patients hospitalized in OMF clinic. Samples were collected by rinsing the mouth with sterile saline. Historical data were also collected.

Material and methods The samples were analysed at the Microbiology Laboratory of UMF Tg Mures Culture: Sabouraud agar medium

Material and methods Identification: Chromogenic medium Identification: For Candida non-albicans Biomerieux ID32C

Material and methods Antifungigram fluconazole and voriconazole following the CLSI standards.

Results

Results Identified yeast species

Results gender vs. Candida carriage p = 0,075

Results smoking habits vs. Candida carriage P = 0,74 P = 0,0053 OR = 2,34 (1,428 - 3,843)

Results oral hygiene vs. Candida carriage P = 0,496

Results antibiotic use vs. Candida carriage P = 0,798 AMP, CRO, DA

Results antifungal resistance in Candida spp.

Conclusions Colonization with yeasts of the oral cavity is present in about half of the patients with OMF conditions Probably due to classical predisposing factors due to chronic oral pathology The most significant predisposing factor is smoking Oral hygiene diminishes Candida colonization although not significantly. The testing of Candida spp. to fluconazole showed an increased resistance, probably due to oral antifungal therapy C. non-albicans kept their sensibility to voriconazole
