Math Homework Study Links pg. 11 Table Leaders: Come see Ms. Smith after writing today’s HW assignment. Individuals: You will need your notebook and journal for today’s class.

Geometry: Lesson 4 Target/Objective: I can identify properties of polygons and distinguish between convex and concave polygons.

Review What is this? With your shoulder partner discuss and write every name that goes with the line, line segment, and ray you see. X Y B C W X Z V U

Angles: What are the three types of angles we have discussed so far?

Remember that polygons must have at least 3 sides. All sides must be straight paths, they must all connect, and can not intersect.

Math Message Using the bag of straws, create a shape with five sides – make sure all sides connect. Talk to your table mates about the shapes you all created. – Identify different angles used. – Is the shape that each person created a polygon? – How are your shapes similar & different?

What is the name of a shape that has five sides & five angles? Pentagon

With your bag of straws, as best as possible, construct this convex pentagon (all of the sides are pushed outward). Now push in one vertex (the point where the sides create an angle). This new shape is still a pentagon, BUT it has a special name… Concave Pentagon Pentagons

Math Vocabulary Convex Polygon – is a polygon in which all the sides are pushed outward. Concave Polygon – is a polygon in which at least two sides are pushed in. Examples:

Practice With your shoulder partner, and your set of straws, one person construct a convex polygon and the other person construct a concave polygon. After construction, talk to each other about the what makes each polygon convex or concave. Time: 3 minutes Voice Level: 1

Journal Work Open your journal to pg. 12 and work through questions 1-2 with your shoulder partner to identify specific properties of polygons. Early Finishers: Independently complete Math Boxes 1-6 on pg. 13. Voice Level: 0-1 Time: 10 minutes

Wrap Up! Did we achieve our target/objective? – I can identify properties of polygons and distinguish between convex and concave polygons. Table Leaders: Bring me your bags of straws Individuals: Get ready to move classes
