5 Dr. Günter BreyerCEDR TG Road Safety, Vienna April 27, 2006  Main focus: –Mid-Term Review of the European Road Safety Action Programme –The three pillars of road safety Infrastructure (results of the High Level Expert Meeting) Vehicle (eSafety technology presentation at a drivers‘ training facility), and Road user (national awareness campaigns and joint European campaign)  Participants: –Ministers of Transport from 34 countries, EC vice-president Barrot  Results: –Agreement on a joint European road safety awareness campaign (subject will be either alcohol or fatigue) –Expression of the need to exchange road safety awareness campaign ideas and material and to share the copyrights on spots etc. Informal Meeting of Ministers

6 Dr. Günter BreyerCEDR TG Road Safety, Vienna April 27, 2006  Goal: halving road fatalities by 2010 (White Paper 2001) from 50 000 to 25 000 fatalities in the EU-25 by the year 2010  Road Safety Action Programme (2003) defines road safety as a “shared responsibility” and sets more than 60 measures to reach the target, most non-legislative  Mid-Term Review of the RSAP published in February 2006 Mid-Term Review 1/3 Background

7 Dr. Günter BreyerCEDR TG Road Safety, Vienna April 27, 2006  Intermediate results until 2005: –17.5%, 41 600 fatalities  Estimated results for 2010: 32 500 fatalities  -50% target can not be achieved without speeding up  Young people between 18 and 25 are the high-risk group (10% of population but 21% of fatalities in 2003)  Motorcyclists fatalities on the rise: +5.6% between 2000 and 2003 (while -12% overall)  if this trends continues every 3 rd fatality will be a motorcyclist in 2010 (every 6 th today) Mid-Term Review 2/3 Results 1

11 Dr. Günter BreyerCEDR TG Road Safety, Vienna April 27, 2006 Road Users Awareness building campaigns  Presentation of national awareness campaigns and their evaluation at the transport ministers’ meeting  Agreement on a joint European road safety poster campaign along the higher road network (either on alcohol or fatigue)  Creation of a European road safety day (starting in 2007)  Best practice exchange shall be fostered  Successful European awareness campaigns such as BOB and EUCHIRES will be continued
