Getting Ready The Massachusetts Maritime Academy Experience

Build your Justification Why upgrade/build a new “Library”?  Accreditation  Educational needs  Leverage emerging technologies  Built 1972 for 225 students (1200 by 2010)

Massachusetts Maritime Academy5 Where we are… SASAKI 2006 MMA 2004

Massachusetts Maritime Academy6 Dated, damaged and dark = not inviting for study MMA 2004

Mold in the Archives Aug 2006 After cleanup …and its still horrible. Before…

Prepare: Learn the Lingo A library building project builds momentum on campus  PR & marketing  Start the “BUZZ” about the project You must come up to speed very quickly  Architect, designer, facilities, construction language - not always intuitive Burble ?

Actions I took to prepare for our library building project Read (bibliography available) Tour libraries that have been transformed Talk with librarians & staff who have done a renovation or new construction Attend workshops about library building projects  The Information Commons: Adapting to the Culture of Net Generation Students (Nov 2005)  Academic Impressions “Library Building Institute” (Mar 2007)

Concepts you should know before the project begins What is your vision & mission of the project  write it, talk about it with all stakeholders  come back to it at every step  your personal vision… Learning Happens Here (Berteaux’ vision for MMA) Make a Difference (Somers’ vision for Bridgewater State) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)  Green Building Rating System Construction cost vs Project Cost Standards: ALA, ACRL, accreditation

Feasibility Study: Definition Undertaken to assess whether a planned project is likely to be practical and successful and to estimate its cost

Feasibility Study: Process Selecting and working with architects Building the Team  Architects: Perry Dean Rogers| Partners  DCAM: representative from Mass. state authority  MMA: Library Director, Academic Dean, Dean of Student Affairs, Facilities Manager Identify stakeholders  Focus groups and meetings Planning and meetings

What our feasibility study told us: Program Details ( sq. ft, no. seats) Perry Dean Rogers | Partners

Visualizing Program Elements

Consensus through Communication Keep the BUZZ going Build consensus through communication Lay ground rules for communication  Establish timelines You are the "library" expert w/ a vision  Find your voice & learn to use it, effectively  Be tenacious (bulldog) to ensure core program elements are not lost (terrier)

Passion, Politics, Power & Money Get comfortable with the politics Learn who has power, especially $$$  College President, Deans, Trustees, Faculty, State Legislators, Governors, etc.  Talk with them at every opportunity Passion for your project is OK  Say and do what you know is right even in the midst of a power play  Hang on like a bulldog when necessary  Go after key concepts like a terrier

Notes on Funding Construction v. Project costs Money is a "driver“  Early cost estimates = guesses  Project feasibility study evolved = $$ reality  PDR|P evolving a new model Politics of money - at many levels Development initiatives  When the ribbon is cut, funding ops end

Conceptual Design – Oct 2007 Carol R. Johnson Associates
