Background (Model) Epistolary Novel: of or pertaining to, or consisting of, letters. Coming of Age Novel: A story about a young person learning a lot about themselves; typically during their teenage years. This story was first recognized by MTV (in 1999). Story takes place in Pittsburgh, PA. This book makes multiple references to the Fort Pitt Bridge and Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Background (Model) Protagonist: Charlie 15 going on 16. Charlie is shy, emotional and extremely smart. The book discusses activities that most teens want to hide from adults.

Themes (Model) Family Structure Friends and Enemies Challenges and Triumphs The Individual vs. Society Love and Romance

Quotes I feel infinite. Sam and Patrick looked at me. And I looked at them. And I think they knew. Not anything specific really. They just knew. And I think that's all you can ever ask from a friend. I love my mom. And this time, I told her I loved her. And she told me she loved me, too. And things were okay for a little while.

Quotes I feel great! I really mean it. I have to remember this for the next time I'm having a terrible week. Girls are weird, and I don't mean that offensively. I just can't put it any other way. I even made her a mix tape and left it at the grave. I hope you do not think that makes me weird.

Quotes We accept the love we think we deserve. I really think that everyone should have watercolors, magnetic poetry, and a harmonica. I don't want to start thinking again. Not like I have this last week. I can't think again. Not ever again.

Prompt Read excerpt #2 Discuss major themes What makes this an epistolary novel? How about a coming of age novel?

Check Answer questions based upon text. Go over answers!

Independent Practice Make an observation about the people around you sometime this week (or now, if you feel like it). Be the “wallflower” and share your observation about those people! Keep it simple and deep! Write a phrase that depicts your observation on the wallflower. Don’t make a personal “dig” that someone in the junior class will respond to (keep it anonymous and clean). Describe what one of the quote from the quote packet means in journal form. Simply state the number of the quote in your response (3-5 sentences).
