3 The Notion of Risk Management RISK the combination of the probability of an event and its consequences (ISO/IEC Guide) RISK Management a central part of any organisations strategic management; the process whereby organisations methodically address the risks attaching to their activities with the goal of achieving sustained benefit within each activity and across the portfolio of all activities; concerns both positive and negative aspects of risk.

4 Aspects of Risk Negative (Downside) / Traditional Approach the losses from currency or interest rate trades in financial markets; financial losses that might be caused by a disruption in a supply chain or cyber or terrorism attack that impairs a company's information technology. Positive (Upside) / New Approach competitive opportunities and strategic advantages that might arise out of deft management of risk; "better decisions" on location based on a risk analysis that would look at the political environment in a country.

5 Risk Management Instruments Evolution Traditional buying insurance; shift to the capital markets with "derivative instruments" that help to manage the ups and downs of moment-to-moment movements in currencies, interest rates, commodity prices and equities; risks are reasonably easy to measure. Innovative ERM; new risk-related data the risks that defy easy measurements or a framework for management.
