Background Knowledge Breaking into Print’s Breaking into Print’s purpose is to share information and facts. Thus, it’s genre is expository. This is a story of invention and refining of a tool we take for granted, a tool that transformed reading from a domain of the elite to one open to the masses. You can read about the famous Johannes Gutenberg press in encyclopedias, Who’s Who references, on the Internet, and so on. The story begins around A.D. 742 when books were copied by hand and were very expensive. Students had to memorize information because they didn’t have their own books. The first book Gutenberg published was the Bible, considered to be the most important book of the time in Europe.
