SPANISH INSTITUTE OF OCEANOGRAFY MARIFISH Fast track pilot project meeting WP 7: “Ecosystem Approach of fisheries in the channel” Extracted mainly from info by Valentin Trujillo (C.O. Vigo), Francisco Sanchez (C.O. Santander) and Enric Massuti (C.O. Baleares) BRUSSELS, June 27-28, 2007 ECOSYSTEM APPROACH ON FISHERIES

MARIFISH §MEC/IEO partner 16 of Marifish §Co-leaders (Iceland) in WP6 (July 07) l Identify current problems in fishery Management (and its connected research) l Select and recommend research topics for pilot projects (Added benefits from coordination) l Focus on the Mediterranean Area §Co-leaders with FR, GR and IRL in WP7 l Agree basic principles, common management procedures - protocols l Identify possible pilot project for joint management l Develop one (Mediterranean?)

FAST TRACK PILOT PROJECT MEETING Aim: §Development of management procedures §Pilot Project 1: Ecosystem Approach

IEO: INTEGRATED (ECOSYSTEM) APPROACH Levels §Specific Projects (Ecological Status) l ECOMARG: Cantabrian Sea l ECOPREST: Galician Cost l IDEA: Mediterranean §Surveys (within Projects) §Studies (ph.D) and Training Courses

PROYECT LEVEL ECOMARG ECOMARG http://www.ecomarg.net/index_en.html http://www.ecomarg.net/index_en.html Study of the continental margin ecosystem and the impact of its fisheries Global Objective n Integrated study of the benthic-demersal ecosystem in the Galician and Cantabrian Sea continental margins n Investigate the structure, the components and the dynamic of the Deep-Sea ecosystem (100-1000 m), n Identify, study and describe vulnerable marine habitats Results / Achievements n Data base for future integral management models (Ecosyst. Status) n Philosophy of the study: ECOPREST n Rock-hopper (tren de bolos) banning: Ministerial Order Methodology n Multidisciplinary approach with different research groups n Inter-relation and coordination (using trophodynamic metamodels)

ECOMARG ECOMARG http://www.ecomarg.net/index_en.html http://www.ecomarg.net/index_en.html Effects of fisheries on the Cantabrian Sea shelf ecosystem (F. Sánchez, I. Olaso)

PROYECT LEVEL ECOPREST Monitoring the Prestige oil spill impacts on northern Iberian ecosystem Monitoring the Prestige oil spill impacts on northern Iberian ecosystem (Sánchez, F., A.Serrano, F. Velasco, S. Parra, I. Frutos and M. Blanco) Global Objective Assess the possible effects of the Prestige oil spill (POS) to high trophic levels through different shelf communities and their trophic cascade of effects. Methodology n Multidisciplinary approach based n Two year Monitoring of benthic and demersal communities n Inter-relation and coordination of large team (using trophodynamic metamodels)

ECOPREST Monitoring the Prestige oil spill impacts on northern Iberian ecosystem Monitoring the Prestige oil spill impacts on northern Iberian ecosystem (Sánchez, F., A.Serrano, F. Velasco, S. Parra, I. Frutos and M. Blanco)

PROJECT LEVEL IDEA IDEA http://www.ba.ieo.es/idea/home/home_i.htm Influence of oceanographic structure and its dynamics on DEmersal populations in waters of the BAlearic Islands First attempt of a multidisciplinary approach towards understanding the dynamics of the exploited demersal ecosystems off Balearic Islands Objectives: n Analyze the spatio-temporal variability in the demersal communities and their trophic resources n Characterize the hydrographic structure and its seasonal and inter- annual variability

PROJECT LEVEL Objectives: n Study seasonal and annual changes in physiological and biological parameters of demersal species n Analyze relationships btw environmental parameters and the seasonal and inter-annual population dynamics of the demersal resources

PROJECT LEVEL (6) Results n Data n Philo n Order

SURVEYS n HATTON BANK (ECOVUL-ARPA project) Bottom trawl studies to identify vulnerable bottom ecosystems (fisheries biology, geomorphology, benthonic ecology and sediment studies). n NAFO PLATUXA: Estimation of fish population and biomass distribution of target species (basically American plaice) on the NAFO area. Demographic Structure and oceanographic conditions. n MALVINAS Identification of vulnerable bottom ecosystems and bottom trawl fishing effects on benthonic communities through an integrated approach (Ecosystem approach?) Data collection on fish captures + improve “Ecological Status” knowledge n Benthonic communities description n Geological and Acoustic data collection n Vulnerable habitats data collection n Bird, Mammals and Turtles observation n Physical sampling: salinity, temp. and density.

STUDIES and TRAINING n ECOSUMMER (EU Marie Curie Action): Consortium of 8 institutions: 700.000 E Training on EA for marine resources management to young researchers n Compilation of information on Chapter 24 of The Sea Vol. 14: The Bay of Biscay: the encountering of the Ocean and the Shelf IEO: Alicia Lavín, Luis Valdes, Francisco Sanchez and Pablo Abaunza IFREMER: André Forest, Jean Boucher, Pascal Lazure, Anne-Marie Jegou Geography (topography, geology), Meteorology, Hydrology, Water masses circulation, biology of pelagic ecosystem, biology of fishes, Ecosystem trophodynamics, trends and risks of the Bay. n Effects of Ecosystem approach on the analysis of fishing activity: Samplings, statistics and procedures by Hernández, C, et al. 2007 n Future DCR
