1 Warm Up What are the advantages and disadvantages of each of the following sources of energy? Nuclear Solar Wind Geothermal Hydroelectric Petroleum/Oil Natural Gas Coal

2 Objective and LEQ SWBAT evaluate the impact of human population growth on the environment and discuss the issue of population growth throughout the world. LEQ: How does humans’ demand for resources affect the environment and people living in that region?

3 Quick Review Coal Nuclear Fission Natural Gas Who am i?
I provide clean energy from running water which turns giant turbines, but there are fewer and fewer locations where I will work I am the most abundant of fossil fuels, a nonrenewable source of energy, expensive to mine, and a cause of acid rain (pollution) I am the “hope for the future.” A free and non-polluting source of energy but expensive to build in homes. On cloudy days I’m hard to find. I release an enormous amount of energy but am dangerous due to high risks of radioactive waste products, meltdowns, and radiation exposure. I form from the splitting nucleus of uranium atoms. I am the cleanest burning fossil fuel but will leave large craters in the earth from where I’m extracted and am highly flamable if handled carelessly. Hydroelectric energy Coal Solar Energy Nuclear Fission Natural Gas

4 Cornell Notes Questions are in RED! Answers are in YELLOW!

5 What is sustainability?
Meeting our current needs without limiting the ability for future generations to meet theirs

6 Think *Brainstorm What are human actions that have a negative environmental impact (not sustainable)? What are human actions that have a positive environmental impact (sustainable)?

7 Pair, Share Human actions that have a negative environmental impact
Overgrazing, Mining, Drilling, Urbanization, Overfishing, Polluting, Agriculture, Deforestation Human actions that have a positive environmental impact Recycling, Planting trees, Alternative Energy Sources, conserving energy, sustainable agriculture

8 LORAX

9 As we watch… Follow along with and answer guided questions
Think About: Why is sustainability important now and in the future? How will our environment and life be affected if we do not use sustainable practices? In what ways will our world change if we continue our current ways of living?

10 Sustainability through Dr. Suess’s Eyes

11 Video Questions After watching part of “The Lorax,” answer the following questions: Why is sustainability important now and in the future? How will our environment and life be affected if we do not use sustainable practices? In what ways will our world change if we continue our current ways of living?

12 What are Chloroflourocarbons (CFCs)?
Active chemicals associated with human products. How do they harm the environment? Destroy the ozone layer (protects us from UV rays, which cause skin cancer). Solutions? CFCs banned in 1970s

13 What is deforestation? Removal of trees to use land for other purposes. How does it harm the environment? Less CO2 removed from environment, damages soil, increases erosion. Solutions? Plant trees, use alternative energy sources, stop deforestation.

14 What are fossil fuels? Nonrenewable; produced over millions of years
Coal- produced from plants Natural gas & petroleum/oil- produced from plants and animals How does it harm the environment? Used faster than replaced Produced CO2 contributing to global warming. Solutions? Alternative energy, renewable resources

15

16 Active chemicals associated with certain human products (hairspray).
CFCs are released when products are used and the chemicals destroy our thin ozone layer, which shields us from the sun’s harmful UV rays more skin cancer CFCs banned by government in 1970s Removal of trees so land can be used for other purposes. Responsible for ~ 20% of Earth’s greenhouse gasses - less CO2 removed from atmosphere by trees -damages soil, increased erosion Replant trees and use other materials or energy sources to prevent cutting down trees Coal, natural gas, & petroleum; formed from remains of dead plants & animals over millions of years. Being used faster than they can be replaced Nonrenewable Releases a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere contributes to global warming Find a renewable source of energy that can be used instead (ex: solar, wind, water, geothermal)

17 Human population GROWTH
1. Based on the Lorax, how does an increased human population cause an increase in the above environmental impacts? 2. What are other causes of an increased human population? 3. How does the history of fossil fuels video reflect human population growth? 4. What have we created to meet our “needs” and what has the consequence been? 5. Should human population growth be controlled? Why or why not? *Population Growth Throughout the World: People Bomb Stations

18 PEOPLE BOMB Find ONE partner
With your partner, you are going to answer the questions for each scenario Read the information for each scenario out loud with your partner-switch off who reads for each scenario Answer the questions on a separate sheet of paper THIS IS A PAIR GRADE… you must each turn in an assignment!

19 1. Which of the following is most often a result of deforestation?
EXIT TICKET 1. Which of the following is most often a result of deforestation? a. Decreased runoff b. Increased erosion c. Increased transpiration d. More nutrients for the soil to use 2. Which substance is considered to be a factor affecting Earth’s ozone layer? Chlorofluorocarbons Ethyl alcohol Nitrogen gas Water vapor 3. The burning of fossil fuels is causing an increase in which of the following? Atmospheric nitrogen Atmospheric oxygen Atmospheric carbon dioxide Atmospheric phosphate 4. Which of the following would be the most sustainable fuel for the Once-ler to use in his Thneed factory? Coal Natural gas Petroleum Solar 5. Carbon dioxide is a factor in global warming. An increase in carbon dioxide has been correlated with an increase in Earth’s temperature. Which source of energy increases the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? Hydroelectric Wind
