Francesco Fidecaro STAC meeting, Cascina, May 28, 2009 Virgo status report

2 Detector upgrades and commissioning Activities were on: Improvements of electronics, software and detector operation Interferometer control and characterization Injection system Optical characterization, thermal effect compensation and their simulation Noise hunting and environmental noise coupling reduction

4 Monolithic Suspensions Strategic goal significant scientific opportunity by increasing the sensitivity at low frequency unique place to test the monolithic suspension and to explore the level of noise at low frequency before these detectors are built. shown that thermal noise of the upper suspension needs now to be considered, in spite of the double pendulum attenuation. Status and activities Optimizing the production of suspension fibers and verifying its reliability and reproducibility Finalizing the design of the payload Coating of the new mirrors at LMA Design of the new marionette Measurement of mechanical behaviour of a dummy payload Work on payload assembly and transport trolley Design and construction of a clean room for Monolithic suspension preparation Starting production of clamps and reference masses Work on fibers and clamps has shown the great reliability and simplicity of use of these suspensions. first measurements on residual losses are promising.

16 Monolithic suspensions Monolithic suspensions are a real bonus for the LV network Also very interesting in coincidence with astronomical observatories Good data for LV analysis: Vela spindown limit can be reached in three months At least six months of data are needed to understand the device before shutting down for Advanced Virgo

17 Data analysis Last C7 paper published; The Virgo collaboration, “Gravitational wave burst search in Virgo C7 data”, Class. Quant. Grav 26 (2009) 085009 VSR1/S5 analysis in progress for all four physics groups VSR2/S6 preparation: low latency triggers, data quality, interferometer figures of merit External collaborations: Swift ToO approved, Antarès/IceCube HE nus: MoU being drafted, Wide Optical Field Telescopes in progress, new proposal on The next galactic Supernova Load on computing centers Data transfer

18 New groups Trento-Padova approved as regular Virgo group: data analysis and paper on bursts, will contribute to Advanced Virgo with mechanics and possibly electronics for the suspensions POLGRAW (Poland) approved as regular Virgo group, contribute on CW, is applying for resources to build vacuum equipment for Advanced Virgo Genoa approved as regular Virgo group, will build LN2 plant for cryotraps RMKI (Hungary) is applying for a grant to use their workshops to build vacuum equipment for Advanced Virgo Working with LKB

19 LV collaboration Regular contacts with LigoDirectorate/LSC Spokesperson, Joint run planning committee, Data Analysis Council, … Meetings in March (Arcadia, CA), June (Orsay), Sepember (Budapest) Face to face and regular meetings for data analysis and instrument science Remote participation now commonly used Data analysis is now common, instruments keep their own identity but contacts are frequent

20 Conclusions The Virgo collaboration just passed a difficult trial, presenting Advanced Virgo in a convincing way, having adopted a project management methodology Issues remain, sometimes not fully addressed because of the little time available, sometimes inherent to the structure of the collaboration In the mean time full steam commissioning the interferometer And working on present and future data analysis These efforts will be rewarded!
