7 7 12 European Public Telecommunications Network Operators joined together, recognising the strategic importance of developing a harmonised approach to the management of environmental issues... … and of demonstrating and promoting the environmental benefits deriving from the use of telecommunications services. November 1996: 21 European Public Telecommunications Network Operators, Members of ETNO, together representing today a turnover of about 150 billion EUROs, signed an Environmental Charter. 12 12 RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT We shall support Research and Development into the contribution new Telecommunications Services can make to Sustainable Development. 71% of the Signatories integrate Environmental Considerations in Innovative Activities (including European R&D Programs) 29% of the Signatories integrate Environmental Considerations in Marketing 33% of the Signatories integrate Environmental Considerations in Sponsorship

13 13 Future initiatives toward IST Program Reflecting medium terms business operations, Telecom Italia will invest in projects according to the 5 mentioned objectives –1) Environmental monitoring systems (for instance: air quality forecasting systems available trough remotised common servers –2) New systems for dissemination to the general public (WAP, UMTS) –3) Integration of environmental information with other public services –4) applications for European Environmental networks (based on EIONET) –5) Innovative Satellite services from Telespazio Good opportunities from IST programs in Services for citizens even if under represented in terms of resources (11 to1 as success ratio) Critical aspect for large industries in IST proposals: –the innovation factor is treated only as technological innovation –casual distribution of expertise during evaluation process –actual evaluation procedures are favouring simple projects, because of lack of time available by the evaluators for complex industrial projects
