Short description of the project Tsunamigenic sources in the Mediterranean Sea region and a relative scale of their potential for tsunami generation (Papadopoulos and Fokaefs, 2005)

Short description of the project Near-field (local) tsunamis with travel times of < 30 min. is a hot topic. The NEAMTWS/IOC/UNESCO, is oriented to provide watch services only in regional scales (for ~1 hr of tsunami propagation time). For near-field warning it is unrealistic to rely on a unique system for the entire basin. Local systems is the most promising solution in synergy with NEAMTWS. Τhe aim of NEARTΟWARN is to develop a prototype local system applicable in areas threatened by near-field tsunamis. NEARTΟWARN is focusing in the test-area of Rhodes island, a highly touristic destination in Europe. Rhodes and Fethiye were selected as the master test-site of the STREP FP6 research project TRANSFER. South Aegean Sea, 1956 tsunami

Core idea of the project: local early tsunami warning system A network of Seismic Alert Devices Early warning for strong earthquake in less than 30 sec Civil protection mobilization Tsunami early warning supported by tide-gauges, decision matrix and pre- simulated scenarios Geographical Management System

Seismic Alert Devices

Components of the system Seismic warning Tide-gauge records Pre-simulated scenarios Warning

Deliverables and deadlines - Major Events 1.3.2012: Web page of the project 30.6.2012: Map and Inventory of near-field tsunami sources in NEAM 31.5.2013: A prototype Data Base for pre-simulated tsunami scenarios 30.9.2013: 1. A network of Seismic Alert Devices (SAD) ready to operate in Rhodes and 2. A network of tide-gauges ready to operate in Rhodes 31.10.2013: Testing of good performance of the SAD network 15.12.2013: A comprehensive report on the sustainability of the early warning system 31.12.2013: 1. Geographical Risk Management System

Final deliverable Operational local system for near-field tsunami warning Operational local system for near-field tsunami warning Seismic early warning system as well Seismic early warning system as well Sustainable system operating by local authorities Sustainable system operating by local authorities Applicable in other areas Applicable in other areas In synergy with national centers and NEAMTWS In synergy with national centers and NEAMTWS
