Summary

District 12 is one of the less fortunate districts and most people are gatherers and hunters, and rely on raising livestock instead of purchasing food. Almost all of the men are Miners, who earn every little work very hard, despite the horrific conditions of the Mines. District 12

The Capitol is a beautiful and wealthy city and also the center of government in Panem. The Capitol is full of rich people and high-tech. It also has a very powerful society and an excellent military force. The city is very harsh on it’s districts and governs them with an iron fist. The Capitol

The Arena is a very large area it is over 20 square miles in diameter. It is full of obstacles such as mines, animal dens, and various snares and traps set by other tributes. There is a large lake in the middle, and a large gold horn like structure lies at one side of the lake. All tributes start on platforms around the horn which is called the “Cornucopia”. The Cornucopia is where all the vital equipment and supplies are. The worse the supplies the further it is from the Cornucopia. The Arena

 Peeta is about 5½ feet tall and has a strong build  He takes an interest in throwing and experimenting with large objects such as throw able boulders during the games and training.  He is a major character in the book and is a protagonist, although he seems to cause some problems throughout the story.  His father is the baker  Peeta is attracted to Katniss Peeta is described like this, he has blond hair and a muscular build

Evaluating the storyline

 In part one of the story Katniss is picked in the reaping along with Peeta Mellark, who she knows but doesn't know how  They are both devastated but Katniss tries to show no emotion  They arrive in the Capitol and are taken to their rooms where Katniss cries  The next morning they stuff themselves with a huge breakfast, both of them have never experienced such an amazing food The events leading up to the climax

 The tributes go to the practice grounds to get familiar with the weapons  After three days of learning they go for private interviews to get more sponsors  When Katniss goes for her interview she misses her first arrow and the sponsors look away and marvel at a roasted pig Katniss was enraged and shoots the apple in the pigs mouth out and leaves The events leading up to the climax

 When Katniss goes to her room she starts to cry but when they say its time for dinner she comes out and watch to see her rating  To her surprise she gets a 11 which is very good especially for a poor district  The next day they go for interviews with Caesar Flickerman, Katniss does a good job of making the crowd lover her  By the time Peeta goes the crowd is crying because he admits he loves her and he will die without her The events leading up to the climax

 The day after the interviews they are going to the arena to enter the Hunger games  Their designers prep them for they games and they’re off  the games start and Katniss runs for the woods while picking up a backpack  She makes her way deep into the woods and decides to rest for the night up in a tree  Late at night she hears sticks cracking and someone lights a fire The events leading up to the climax

 As soon as the fire starts a group of people attack the person who is a girl from the sound of her shrieks  The group comes near her tree and she sees it is the pairs from 1,2,4, and Peeta  She is very upset but after they leave she sleeps  The next day she moves to a new tree and finds food and gets settled in  The group form 1,2,4 and petta find her and unsuccessfully try to kill her The events leading up to the climax

 Rue is in a tree near her and points out a wasp nest above her and Katniss comes up with a plan  Before the Careers(kids from rich districts like 1,2,and 4) wake up she cuts the nest down and runs, she is stung several times and sees the Careers running and one fall, the one with the bow  She runs to get it just as she sees Peeta running back telling her to go, she grabs the bow and runs The events leading up to the climax

 The gamemakers realize that the tributes are spreading apart and worry that the audience is losing attention and care  They then spawn a forest fire to bring the tributes together and a flaming fireball nearly kills Katniss  Katniss gets injured by the shrapnel  Katniss runs to a new tree  She applies the healing cream to her leg  Peeta comes to her aid and they team up The events leading up to the climax

 They find a cave  She realizes that Peeta is hurt too and uses the remaining healing cream on him  They argue on who is most fit to go hunt  Katniss informs Peeta on the bird call strategy  She leaves the Cave to go hunt  After walking a few yards and doing a bird call with no respond, she sprints back to Peeta  Turns out he was not hurt, just forgot to respond The events leading up to the climax

 Katniss and Peeta run to the Cornucopia as a result of being chased by giant vicious dogs  They notice another tribute running to the Cornucopia for safety  Katniss fires an arrow at him, knocking him off of the structure  The awaiting dogs chew him to shreds and eat him alive  Katniss and Peeta are worried since there can only be a single victor, they agree to eat poisonous berries to ‘send a message’ The turning point, decides the outcome of the story and characters

 Man vs. society  In all of the book Katniss was fighting against society to eat, hunt, and live she was in a constant struggle to find food for her family and find a safe place in the games  In the arena she had to find ways to survive against stronger, taller, and faster components than she ever had to because she has never had to kill another person

 Man vs. nature  In The Hunger Games Katniss continually has to fight against weather, the terrain, and animals.  During the games she is stung by bees, burned by fires, chased by wild dogs and, battles dehydration. She has to fight through fires and animals every step of the way just to get water.  It is evident that she verses nature in the book when she has to go against nature.

 Man vs. Man  In The Hunger Games Katniss is constantly struggling against other humans  She fights against Cato, Clove, The Careers and the boy from district one  She almost dies several times but fights to live and gets away barely. Here drive to live and skill in the wild proves her to be a good contestant to live against the powers of her opponents

 Katniss and Peeta win the games and are treated for all their injuries  Katniss is strapped into her hospital bed and when ever she wakes up gets food, eats, then is knocked out again  She wakes up and all the constraints and tubes are gone, she gets up and leaves the room and sees Haymitch, Effie and runs to him she talks to him and goes to her room. The next day she wakes up and gets ready for her interview The events following the climax

 The Resolution of The Hunger Games is when Katniss and Peeta Finish the games and do the interviews with Caesar Flickerman, where they are congratulated by many people  Katniss takes the stage with Peeta to watch the video replay of the Games, she's aware that the most dangerous part of the Games has only just begun. During the video showing, as well as during her interview with Caesar Flickerman, Katniss is quite convincing. Peeta is as well, but he doesn't require any coaching. Katniss, thus far, has preferred to believe that Peeta is simply a more natural actor. She wonders, though, if he might truly love her.  The novel ends with Katniss and Peeta on their train ride back to District 12 as heroes. The closer she gets to home, the more confused Katniss becomes about her feelings for Peeta and about her true identity. She knows that pretending to love Peeta has saved her life and that she must continue to pretend to love him so that the Capitol doesn't punish her for her final act in the arena. Still, her mind centers on Gale and how she can't wait to be reunited with him. When Peeta finds out that Haymitch was coaching Katniss even after their return, he feels betrayed. He wants to know what has been true between them and what things will be like once they've returned to District 12. Katniss can feel him distancing himself from her and knows that she is losing him. At the novel's end, Katniss isn't sure who she is now that she's a victor in the Hunger Games. She also doesn't know whom she loves, Gale or Peeta, or where her life will go from here with the Capitol's eyes closely upon her. http://www.cliffsnote s.com/study_guide/li terature/hunger- games/book- summary-3.html

 The constant them of The Hunger Games is action adventure, this is evident in the way that behind every wall and bend is a new challenge and opportunity  In each chapter there is at least one fight or death, Katniss also fights for survival as she climbs up trees and runs from rabid dogs  There is no doubt that The Hunger Games is a Action Adventure

 The mood in The Hunger Games is primarily sad or exciting, we can see this when Katniss finds Rue who she was hoping she would find  Also the mood is excited or happy when Katniss escapes the tree and gets safely, but not un scathed, away from her attackers  In many parts we do see very sad parts like when thresh or Rue dies. To me this was vey disappointing and surprising even though I knew at one point they would have to die

 The mood at the beginning of the book is mostly sad and gloomy, nothing is really going Katniss or Peeta’s way. They have both been picked or volunteered for the games and are certain that they will die. On the train the shock really settles in and they go to their room to think about home and family, this was very sad because I don’t think that anyone can imagine what this must just feel like.

 The mood in the middle of the book is a jumble of emotions. Katniss finds Rue, happy, destroys food stash, happy, Rue dies, sad, and then when she hears that two tributes can live she has to find Peeta. That is probably the happiest part of the book besides them winning and when she does find him and repairs his wounds.

 The mood nearing the and of the book is mostly happy because Katniss and Peeta win the games and are safe, but as the real threat appears the mood goes from happy to concerned. This happens because the pair are not yet safe and the Capitol is very angry with their stunt, so, to solve this problem Katniss* must act like they were madly in love. This brings about stress because your hoping they will live. *Petta does not have to act like he is in love because he is “Already there”
