What kind of materials absorb sound? Soft materials i.e.: Styrofoam, spray foam, people What kind of matertials reflect sound? Hard materials i.e.: tile floor, desks, wood, metal, block

Diaphragm Metal Coil MagnetGenerating Element Backplate Classifying mics Type: Ceramic, Dynamic, Ribbon, Condensor, PZM Pickup Pattern: Omnidirectional, Directional Mic Mount: Table Stand, Floor Stand, Boom, Handheld You can be specific i.e.: An omnidirectional, ribbon, boom mic

4 TYPES OF MICS Ceramic/Crystal Cheap Not for important audio/video Where do you see this daily? Dynamic Tough/Durable Where do you see this most often? Ribbon Expensive Fragile/Sensitive Where do you see this most often? Activity Make a decision as a station manager: You send a reporter into the field. You have to give them one of these three mics to use. On a separate piece of paper, pick one and give three reasons that you would pick that mic for use outdoors. You can reference your notes.

5 CONDENSER MIC AND DRESSING Condenser Mic Where do we see this most often? How do we dress these appropriately?

6 PICKUP PATTERNS AND SOUND PERSPECTIVE Omnidirectional Picks up audio all around the mic Directional Picks up audio in a specific pattern Sound Perspective Making the audio sound like it is coming from where it’s supposed to come from. i.e.: Surround Sound

7 IMPEDENCE What does it mean to “impede” someone or something? To block, interfere, or stop Think about a race…

8 IMPEDANCE CONTINUED Now think about a cross country race…

9 THE REST… Look over microphone suggestions… Know the jobs of the audio booth equipment Audio Console Video Monitor Know what lines around a cable plug mean.
