Country Profile

From The Syllabus Country Profile. This is an in depth (6-10 pages) scholarly examination of media landscapes, coupled with a brief (10 minutes or so) presentation of a country of your choice. Powerpoints, graphs, etc … aren’t a bad idea. This will be done in APA style.

Goals We are natural consumers of media, but the tendency is to be consumers of US media. The goal is to look at the media of another country critically and draw some conclusions comparing it to our own. You will then present to the class. You are to do this in APA style. We will review that today.

Common Types of Papers Types of papers (according to the Purdue OWL) An analytical paper breaks down an issue or an idea into its component parts, evaluates the issue or idea, and presents this breakdown and evaluation to the audience. An expository (explanatory) paper explains something to the audience. An argumentative paper makes a claim about a topic and justifies this claim with specific evidence. The claim could be an opinion, a policy proposal, an evaluation, a cause-and-effect statement, or an interpretation. The goal of the argumentative paper is to convince the audience that the claim is true based on the evidence provided. You will do either an analytical or expository paper. You will not make an argument.

Some Questions You May Want To Ask Role of Regulation? Impact of Political System? Public or Commercial models? Dominant Players? Role of Technology? Role of National/Ethnic/Religious Identities? Languages? Media Importer/Exporter? Media Concentration/Monopoly? If a developing country, what role is media having in development?

Resources Visit the library. Use academic journals. You should use at least 1. Do not use Wikipedia (or ANY encyclopedia) as a source, but you can use it as a starting point. Check the references and go there. European Journalism Centre http://www.ejc.net/media_landscape/ http://www.ejc.net/media_landscape/

APA Papers must be done in APA style. Easy Writer (required by majors) discussions how to do this. Also use Purdue’s Online Writing Lab (OWL).
