interface to Grid-type environment Grid-type environment enabling technologies - generic components - sector- specific components prototype PSE Domain 1 application Domain 2 application Domain n application... complex problem solving enabling technologies infrastructure spectrum covered by an IP on enabling application technologies Tasks on evolutionary update of used grid environment(s) requirements specs to NGG development projects Tasks on exchange with applications: evolutionary update of requirements specs by application development dissemination A potential Structure for IPs on Enabling Application Technologies

GRID Layer Resource & Services Integration Layer Knowledge Discovery Layer Application areas Problem Solving Environments Medium Term Longer Term Take: Current & Evolving technologies Generic Enabling Applications Technologies

Questions for Discussion Which application sectors need extended problem solving environments and what are their requirements for the resource & service integration layer ? Which sectors can drive the developments of the (2) horizontal layers ? Which sectors are prepared to be early adopters ? Which type of technology developers would be needed for the (2) horizontal layers ? (Technology re-use should be assured) What research activities are ongoing that contribute to the development of the horizontal layers ? What are the next steps ? The chairmens view: there should be a subsequent discussion group/ working group meeting/workshop including visionary experts (perhaps not all present) and key players.

Questions for Discussion Which application sectors need extended problem solving environments and what are their requirements for the resource & service integration layer ? Which sectors can drive the developments of the (2) horizontal layers ? Application sectors identified: automotive, bio-informatics, Pharma, meteorology/climate, Health, aerospace, Geo-Physics, access to cultural databases, finance, oil discovery, chemical/manufacturing processes, …. Requirements need further discussion Which sectors are prepared to be early adopters ? automotive, bio-informatics, meteo/climate Which type of technology developers would be needed for the (2) horizontal layers ? (Technology re-use should be assured) Experts from the 4 layers

Questions for Discussion What research activities are ongoing that contribute to the development of the horizontal layers ? Information available on variety of Grid projects has not arrived at the applications users (present in the audience) What are the next steps ? The chairmens view: there should be a subsequent discussion group/ working group meeting/workshop including visionary experts (perhaps not all present) and key players. Clearly expressed requirements for further discussion fora Fraunhofer/SCAI offered to host one such workshop looking at knowledge engineering and industry-focussed applications
