4 ARES Overview The Amateur Radio Emergency Service or “ARES” was established in 1935 as part of the ARRL field organization ARES consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes

5 Track Record For almost 100 years radio amateurs have been building a proud tradition of public service ARES groups are activated to help in real emergencies somewhere in the US almost every week Both the White House and Congressional reports on Hurricane Katrina praised the role of more than 1,000 amateur radio operators who provided emergency communications during the disaster When all else fails….amateur radio still works!

11 Skywarn  NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS) established SKYWARN® with partner organizations in the 1970’s  Nearly 290,000 trained volunteer severe weather spotters  NWS encourages anyone with an interest in public service and access to communication, such HAM radio, to join the SKYWARN® program  Administered and trained by 122 local Weather Forecast Offices  The working partnership between NWS and ARRL is formally documented through a Memorandum of Understanding “Skywarn® and the Skywarn® logo are registered trademarks of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, used with permission.” Locally: 147.300 Rptr
