1 Photosynthesis and Cell Respiration
What’s the big idea? Photosynthesis and Cell Respiration

2 ENERGY CONVERSION All energy on earth comes from the sun.
Plants take the light energy given off by the sun and convert it to chemical energy (glucose) through the process of photosynthesis. This process takes place in the chloroplast.

3 ENERGY CONVERSION Because glucose cannot be used by cells as energy, they use mitochondria to make energy in the form of ATP.

4 ENERGY CONVERSION The overall energy conversions for us to make it useable then, is: Light E  chemical E (glucose) ATP (useable chemical energy - can be used for mechanical energy)

5 BIG IDEA #2 The elements cycle

6 CYCLING OF ELEMENTS While energy is converted and used up, the elements used in the process can be cycled.

7 CYCLING OF ELEMENTS Carbon enters the chloroplast as CO2 and is used to make glucose (C6H12O6). The glucose is then used by the mitochondria and CO2 is again given off.

8 CYCLING OF ELEMENTS Hydrogen and Oxygen take a similar ride. They enters the chloroplast as CO2 and H2O, are used to make glucose, and then are broken back into H2O and CO2 by the mitochondria.

9 CYCLING OF ELEMENTS So basically…
The chloroplast takes CO2 and H2O and make C6H12O6 turning light energy into chemical The mitochondria breaks down the C6H12O6 into CO2 and H2O turning chemical energy into useable (chemicalmechanical)
