5 Agenda 1.Early libraries has many different strategies for organizing their collections, making it hard to use the books. Each library was different. 2.Melville Dewey created a simple decimal system to simplify and standardize the arrangement of library collections. The system is used to this day. 3.The Dewey Decimal system is similar to today’s grocery stores; but since books, unlike groceries, all look alike, cataloging is needed. The major components of cataloging are a spine label, signs, and a cross-referenced online database. 4.In addition to numerical spine labels, the following spine markings may be found: REF FIC E VID AUD 5.Demonstration of City Schools Union Catalog— KOHA 6.The establishment of the Library of Congress 7.Demonstration of the Enoch Pratt online catalog *Study sheets/summary sheets/outlines of most important facts *Visual demonstrations *Presentation of material in small steps *Read or paraphrase subject matter *Manuscript writing rather than cursive *Seating to reduce distractions

10 Melvil Dewey Melvil Dewey was a librarian who lived many years ago. He wanted people to be able to find books in his library. He invented a way to arrange the books using numbers—just like a food store.
